Alternatives When You're Angry

Every parent knows how angry you can become when a child doesn't behave. Yelling and spanking might be tempting, but they don't teach your child what he or she should do instead. Check out the bulletin board in Families First Health Center (pictured at left) for some ways to calm down that you might not have thought of - for example, whispering, taking your own time out, or acting like a silly gorilla - and other helpful information. Also, have a look at Positive Discipline: a Guide for Parents, from the University of Minnesota. (This is a PDF document; use Adobe Acrobat to open.)

Make a Photo-Matching Game

Use last year's calendar to create a photo-matching game. Have your children cut out all the big photos from each months' page, and the small photos on the back cover, and then match up the ones that correspond. Laminate the pictures if you can so they'll last longer.
