Scientists from Johnson Matthey visited TESD elementary schools and conducted hands-on experiments with students.
Local Scientists Visit TESD Elementary Schools

Scientists from Johnson Matthey, a local specialty chemicals company, visited Beaumont, New Eagle and Valley Forge Elementary Schools earlier this month to share hands-on science experiments with students. Second grade students observed changes to liquids and solids when liquid nitrogen was used as a catalyst. They also witnessed how frozen tennis balls no longer bounced due to a chemical reaction. An inflated balloon was placed in a container of liquid nitrogen and the balloon shrunk in size because the air inside the balloon was compressed due to the colder temperature. Once the balloon was removed and returned to room temperature the balloon regained its original size. These experiments directly connect to the study of solids, liquids and gases in the second grade science curriculum.

Third grade students study density in the science curriculum. The Johnson Matthey scientists demonstrated the difference in density of cans of regular cola and diet cola when placed in a container of water. The diet cola can floated while the regular cola can sank because the artificial sweetener in the diet cola weighs less than the sugar in the regular cola. Every third grader also created a density diver in a water bottle and witnessed how added pressure changed the density causing the diver to rise and fall. TESD students enjoyed the live experiments and were very appreciative of the scientists and engineers who volunteered their time.
Hillside Elementary School Students Host Weather Show
Hillside Elementary School Weather Show
Hillside Elementary School first graders performed a Weather Show in conjunction with their science unit.

First grade students at Hillside Elementary School performed a Weather Show last week as part of their science unit on weather. The show incorporated songs and the story A Magic School Bus Kicks Up a Storm!  Students made decorations and special hats to illustrate the type of weather represented by their class. During the show, they sang a variety of songs that described what they learned about weather. "The children really enjoyed putting on the Weather Show. It was great practice and an exciting experience for the first graders," states teacher Libby Pechin.
