How To Add Duals To
Your Garden Tractor

Nothing fancy is needed to turn your garden tractor into a "dually". Dave Hartman did it with a couple of hubs salvaged from older garden tractors. Simply bolted in place without welding, they're secure and stable.

"I've seen duals mounted with all-thread rod, and realized I could make something stronger," says Hartman. "When I bought new hubs for my 1972 Deere 110, I noticed that if you bolted two hubs together they looked like full-size tractor dual hubs." Read More

Self-Propelled Garden Cart

"I didn't want to pay up to $2,000 or more for a battery-powered nursery garden cart. So I built my own gas-powered model," says Mark Jenkins, Nevada, Mo.

The low-profile garden cart measures 9 ft. long and has a 7-ft. long, 2-level table on front that holds up to 27 flats. The table, made from cattle panel welded to a metal frame, can be quickly removed by loosening three bolts.
The cart's rear axle is off an old reel-type riding mower and is fitted with 3-ft. high lug tires, while the front axle is home-built and rides on 15-in. car tires. Power is supplied by a 5 hp Briggs & Stratton gas engine located next to the... Read More
Self-Propelled "Boom Loader"

"I built it to move granite monuments around cemeteries, but it can be used to move almost any heavy object," says Bob Unger, Mena, Ark., about his self-propelled "boom loader."

The 2-WD rig is powered by a 5 hp Briggs & Stratton vertical engine. It belt-drives a hydraulic pump that powers a pair of motors. One motor is used to operate a hydraulic cylinder that raises & lowers the boom, while the other motor drives a 2-speed transaxle on back salvaged from a Wheelhorse riding mower. Read More

Riding Mower Converted into a Log Splitter

Vance Burns stripped a 16hp Sears Craftsman riding mower down to the motor and frame to create a wood splitter complete with a hitch and hoist.

He replaced the mower's front wheels with an old trailer axle and mounted an I-beam across it with a hitch to make the splitter mobile. The hoist is made out of 2 by 2-in. tubing, and Burns purchased a winch and grapple to pick up wood blocks off the ground and lay them on the splitter.
"I added an 11 gpm hydraulic pump and 4 by 24-in. stroke cylinder," Burns says. "I installed the hydraulic valve where the steering wheel used to be, and the pump is mounted on the motor shaft.

I used a section of log truck boom for the hydraulic oil tank and added a toolbox on the side to hold gas, oil and tools." Read More
