Georgia URISA, ASPRS Mid South, SAMSOG and GITA Southeast are joining together again for the Georgia Geospatial Conference of 2014 to be held October 6th-8th at the Classic Center in downtown Athens. Participants are welcome from federal, state, local governments; academic; private sector; non-profit and international organizations.
If you are a practitioner, student, or otherwise interested, in the fields of geographic information systems or surveying, please make plans to attend the largest geospatial conference in Georgia. For three days, you will have the chance to network with peers, share projects and ideas, and learn.
On October 6th, there will be pre-conference workshops. On October 7th and 8th, you will hear from leaders in the GIS and surveying fields with practitioners sharing papers and presentations. On Tuesday afternoon, we have a session devoted to future leaders in the GIS field: students. That night we will also host a social in Downtown Athens.

Benefit Workshop to assist Joe Bless Family
|
Dear Georgia URISA members and friends,
The Georgia URISA Board was recently made aware of a GIS colleague whose family is in need of immediate and lasting assistance. Joe Bless is a graduate from the Gainesville College GIS program and is currently employed as a GIS analyst at an Atlanta based GIS firm. Some of you may know Joe and are aware of his story. Joe was recently admitted into treatment for a degenerative brain disease that has affected his ability to work or to lead a normal life. Loss of income is hard for anyone, but for Joe and his family, the situation was made worse during the first snowstorm in January when pipes in their house burst. The broken plumbing flooded out the living areas, damaged much of their property like clothes and furniture, and made the house uninhabitable. The family has been living out of suitcases in a hotel for several weeks until their house can be repaired. Joe and his wife Lucinda have two young children.
In an effort to raise some much needed funding for Joe and his family, Georgia URISA has organized a workshop to benefit the Bless family. We were able to get everything donated in terms of licensing, instructor time and classroom space, so 100% of the funds raised for this workshop will go directly to the Bless family to help them get through the challenges that they are now facing. Special thanks go to Sara Yurman for agreeing to teach the class pro bono, Natalie Culpepper for donating classroom space at the ESRI offices in Alpharetta, and Keri Brennan for donating the URISA workshop license for us to use at no cost. This has all come together in a short period of time so that we can provide assistance in a timely manner to Joe. Please take this opportunity to leverage some great training at an affordable cost while helping out one of our colleagues in his time of need.
A fund is also set up for you to give directly to the Bless family. Here is the link to the donation page:
https://fundly.com/aiding-the-bless-family. Every dollar helps them to buy clothes for their children, food, and to repair the house so that they can move back home. If you would rather to donate time, then rest assured that construction helpers are not going out of style any time soon. Contact me at [email protected], and I can connect you with their friend who is the contractor for the repairs.
Thank you for your kindness and consideration.
Sincerely,
Colin Gowens
