Dr. Richard Thomas (RT) Duke IV - English Language Arts Supervisor, Boise School District

Dr. Richard Duke has served students for more than 15 years. During that time he has worked as an English language teacher (Ankara, Turkey - 2003-04; and New York, NY - 2004-09). Dr. Duke also served as Principal at Juniper Hills High School (Department of Juvenile Corrections) in Nampa, ID - 2009-12. He presently works as English Teacher and Coach (football, basketball and track) at South Junior High School, Boise School District (2012 to present). In addition, Dr. Duke serves as elementary summer school principal in the Boise School District (2016 to present).  

Dr. Duke brings a strong background in English language, reading and writing instruction, which he developed as a middle school language arts teacher and as an English language instructor in Turkey. He has extensive experience in reaching a wide variety of students by providing differentiated learning approaches. He has served as an instructional lead at South Junior High School, where he developed professional development opportunities to assist teachers in the implementation of AVID teaching strategies: writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to learn (WICOR) in the classroom. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program to help prepare students for success in college, careers and life.  He also brings positive and effective leadership strategies and experience as a school administrator.  

Dr. Duke earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Secondary Education with a concentration on English Literature and Writing from Carroll College (Helena, MT); a Master of Science Degree in School Building Leadership from Mercy College (New York, NY); an Educational Specialist Degree from the University of Idaho; and a Doctorate of Education Degree from the University of Idaho.
