Advantages of Buying Local

Eating local is eating well. There are several advantages to buying and eating food from a local farmers market. Most importantly a healthier you and a healthier environment. You are your own quality control when you buy direct from the farmer. 

 

When you buy local the food is fresher and tastes better. Eating food grown in the local area is more sustainable and ecofriendly as it cuts down on the money, energy and resources needed to ship the food to you. Buying local creates an environment where the community can communicate with the farmer. What better way to find out about your food quality then talking with the people who grow it. Most farmers are more than happy to talk to their customers about their farming practices and quality of food. Also, buying local helps to build community. The money spent at your local farmers market stays in the community.

 

Shopping at a farmers market is a wonderful experience. One of the best things about going to the farmers market is that you have the opportunity to talk with like-minded, health-conscious individuals. It is commonplace to share stories, share recipes and meet your neighbors.

 

Snuggle up and visit your farmers market this Fall and Winter. Being outdoors and getting exposure to the sun is especially beneficial during this season. The sun is a great source of vitamin D, which is great for boosting immunity, supporting healthy bones and skin and increasing serotonin, therefore reducing the chances of depression.

 

Eat well and live well this season. Visit your local farmers market for food that is naturally grown and naturally good.

What's Sweet About Sweet Potatoes?

Sweet Potato

  

Sweet potatoes are naturally scrumptiously sweet tasting, but their natural sugars are slowly released into the bloodstream helping to insure a balanced and continuos source of energy without the blood sugar spikes that lead to fatigue and weight gain. Sweet potatoes belong to an entirely different food family than either yams. They are a source of potassium, high in vitamin B6 and vitamin C. They also contain vitamin D, iron and magnesium.  

 

Recent research has shown that extracts from sweet potatoes can significantly increase blood levels of adiponectin in persons with type 2 diabetes. Adiponectin is a protein hormone produced by our fat cells, and it serves as an important modifier of insulin metabolism. Persons with poorly-regulated insulin metabolism and insulin insensitivity tend to have lower levels of adiponectin, and persons with healthier insulin metabolism tend to have higher levels. While more research on much larger groups of individuals to further evaluate and confirm these blood sugar regulating benefits, this area of health research is an especially exciting one for anyone who loves sweet potatoes. 

  

Sweet potatoes are extremely versatile. They can be roasted, steamed, baked, grilled or eaten raw. A few serving ideas include pur�eing cooked sweet potatoes with bananas, maple syrup and cinnamon, steaming cubed sweet potatoes, tofu, and broccoli or baking sweet potatoes for side dishes. 

  

When purchasing choose one that is firm and does not have any cracks, bruises or soft spots. Sweet potatoes should be stored in a cool, dark and well-ventilated place. Ideally the storage area should not be above 60�F /15�C, which would fit the characteristics of a root cellar. Just keeping them loose (not in a plastic bag, but if desired, a brown paper bag with multiple air holes will work) and store them in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated cupboard away from sources of excess heat (like the stove).

 

Sweet potatoes are very low in saturated fat and cholesterol. We encourage you to enjoy their natural flavor without adding butter, margarine and more sugar that reduces the health benefit.

 

Sweet potatoes are a great compliment to turnip, mustards, collards or kale. Pick up all of these nutritious vegetables this week are market.

 

 


Baked Sweet Potato Fries Recipe

 

Baked Sweet Potato Fries

 

 

Ingredients 

 

Extra Virgin Olive Oil, for tossing

5 sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch long slices, then 1/4-wide inch strips, using a crinkle cut knife

1 tablespoon House Seasoning (recipe follows)

1/2 teaspoon paprika

 

 

Directions 

 

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
  2. Line a sheet tray with parchment. 
  3. In a large bowl toss sweet potatoes with just enough oil to coat. 
  4. Sprinkle with House Seasoning and paprika. 
  5. Spread sweet potatoes in single layer on prepared baking sheet, being sure not to overcrowd.
  6. Bake until sweet potatoes are tender and golden brown, turning occasionally, about 20 minutes. 
  7. Let cool 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

 

House Seasoning 

 

1 cup salt

1/4 cup black pepper

1/4 cup garlic powder

 

For the House Seasoning

 

Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months

Latissa S. Jones, affectionately called Chef "Elle" is the Founder of Rawsome Foods, Inc., a non profit 501(c)3 organization, designed to teach you to rebuild, restore and renew your health with raw and living foods. She has helped hundreds deal with high blood pressure, diabetes, weight loss, autoimmune diseases and even cancer by showing them how to detox their bodies, therefore, allowing it to heal on its own. Latissa knows the frustration of trying to find a solution, because she has experienced several of these diseases first-hand.

                             

Chef Elle is classically trained as a French chef; whose specialty is gourmet, vegan, raw and living foods. She has over 10 years of experience with health and nutrition, and holds her nutritional certificate through the National Restaurant Association.

 

Latissa states, "My mission is not to convince you to eat RAW but to make it easier once you decide."

Fat Boy is the link between the prison industrial complex and the rice paddies of Southeast Asia. Fat Boy will leave you in awe.

 

The piece explores the contrast between the greed, materialism and seemingly relentless desire for more that Castellanos sees as driving American culture, with the desperate need, necessary frugality and - sometimes - contentment of other, less materialistic and prosperous countries.

Holiday Wreath Making Fun!

(also offered in December)

  

Make a beautiful and fragrant holiday wreath or set of candle rings with materials like fresh rosemary and other herbs from the TLW farm, cones and berries. Have fun learning to make lovely items for your home or for a gift from natural, seasonal materials. In this two-hour, hands-on class, participants will create an item to take with them. Most materials will be provided, but you may bring sharp scissors, wire cutters, favorite ribbon, or "add-ons." Class limited to 12 people.

Instructor: Patience Allan-Glick is a talented, certified floral designer who has studied and assisted outstanding local florists like John Grady Burns of Atlanta and Natchez MS, the design team at Bold American Events and Frances Florist. Patience is the proprietor of Simply Magic Florals & Botanicals, which creates unique, fragrant, and affordable floral and botanical arrangements, emphasizing locally-sourced, natural flowers and materials. She is also a TLW Certified Urban Grower.

We're looking to catch you green-handed!

  

America Recycles Day

 

Be a friend to the planet. Celebrate Recycle Day by dropping off plastics (#s 1-6), tin cans, aluminum and paper to Wheat Street Garden. Bring fruit and vegetables scraps for compost and tree leaves for mulch. Take a photo of yourself recycling and post on the TLW social media pages, then show at market to receive a $2.00 off coupon and a free reusable grocery bag. Event dates are Nov. 11 - 16 at 75 Hilliard Street N.E., Atlanta, GA 30312.

 

As a part of our efforts to engage youth and promote environmental stewardship, TLW will use recycled plastic gallon and half-gallon jugs to create bird feeders on Wednesday and Friday, November 14 and 15 at TLW Markets. Basic Gardening 101 - Winter gardening in Georgia

 

Hands Planting 

 

This class will provide you with gardening basics, including building good soil, what to plant now, best practices, pest management, and more. Please be prepared for experiential learning by wearing comfortable clothing and close toed shoes. You may bring garden gloves if desired. Participants will take home fall/winter seedlings. Course emphasis on preparing for frost and freezing temps.

Instructor: Uriah Yisrael, is the son of a sharecropper and master gardener. Uriah uses his 20 years of professional training in teaching, publishing and writing to create a unique, meaningful and enjoyable learning experience for new gardeners. With just a rake, shovel and hoe, Uriah teaches the fundamentals of urban farming. He says, "site, soil and seed" are the key ingredients for a successful garden. He sincerely believes that agriculture is the solution for the country's wealth, health and spiritual problems. Uriah is a member of the TLW staff and has also worked with Metro Atlanta Urban Farm, ReVision Urban Farm (Boston, MA) and the American Community Gardeners Association.
