Cocoa Branch Expedition - Awards Ceremony

May 24th was a very busy day for our Botanical Garden staff as they prepared for a special ceremony of appreciation for the staff who assisted with the biggest expedition of 2016. Specially invited guests were on hand with a Social Mixer which featured a cocktail reception with tempting appetizers and drinks. Special guests included Sharon Matola- The Belize Zoo founder & director, Tony Rath- acclaimed Photographer and Bruce Holst- Botany Director for Marie Selby Botanical Garden in Sarasota, Florida. Ella and Ian were on hand to receive invited staff from the Caves Branch Botanical Garden and tour guides who assisted on the venture such as Carlos Hernandez, Thelma Garcia, Justo Navas and other's who ventured into the rugged jungles of southern Belize on a path-finding expedition to conduct an inventory of epiphytes. The purpose of this project was to highlight specific plants that may disappear due to logging or agricultural development. The 21 day long expedition not only bonded the team through tough hikes with little or no communication but with fun night-time fire stories and laughter to get them through the incredible challenges of the journey. At the end of the evening a plaque was presented to each of the expedition members in recognition for their hard work and dedication to the project.

Caves Branch Team - Maintaining Our Communities Health & Cleanliness!

On May 19th, our Guide Department manager Darrel Smith represented Caves Branch Lodge at a Vector Control training that was held in Belmopan City, Belize. This training was offered by the Belmopan City Council in an effort to inform and prevent mosquito borne illnesses. Malaria, Dengue and of course the Zika Virus were all topics of discussion and education. Keeping these and other vector diseases at bay lies mainly on preventative practices and habits of every home and family around the world. The 2-day course ended with certifications of completion for each participant.

On May 21st a volunteer team from Caves Branch Lodge took part in a local clean-up initiative along the Hummingbird & George Price Highways as well as in and around Belmopan in participation with the Belmopan City Council. Several youth groups and local organizations also volunteered their time. Almost 200 bags of garbage was collected and we are proud to have our staff volunteer part of their weekend for something as special as keeping Belize clean! A huge THANK YOU to each of them!

We hope that you enjoyed a few of our highlights. We look forward to bringing you more fun news bits from our hideaway in the jungle!
