Creative Movement (Multi-age)
Tuesdays -or- Thursdays*, 3:30-4:30 p.m.(Preschool)
Wednesdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m.(K-2)
Thursdays, 2:30-3:30 p.m.(3-6)
September 10 - November 12
Tuition: $130
$110 for students enrolled in Willowwind full-time ASP
Preschool: This age group's natural curiosity about their bodies and motion is harnessed and encouraged; instead of merely imitating or pretending to be something else, the children explore the unique ways in which their bodies move, shapes, levels, qualities, and different locomotive movements. Games involving tempo (fast/slow), counting and basic rhythms, freezing/melting/flowing, and "listening" both with the ears and the body are enjoyed.
K-2: While honoring freedom and creative exploration of the elements of dance, this age group is guided towards greater self-awareness in their creative play within each day's lesson. "Action words", "describing words", and more complicated combinations of the elements of dance are addressed in addition to more advanced versions of the creative games played at the preschool level. Being aware of one's own body, the space, other people's bodies in the space, and making deliberate, conscious choices about how to move as an individual and as a group are stressed.
3-6: Includes age-appropriate explorations of the elements of dance and adds a focus on complex patterns and the ability to remember movement. "Body mad libs" in which the children dance "sentences" that structure a subject, verb, object into a phrase (adding in many fun and challenging adverbs or adjectives as the game progresses) is one example of a creative game played with this age group. Some group choreographic activities encouraging creative cooperation, "site-specific" dancing, and interaction with the natural environment are also offered.
Instructor:
Elizabeth June Bergman is a dancer, improviser, choreographer, scholar, and educator based out of Iowa City. Her creative work in many subjects within movement, dance, culture, and history has been expressed in many ways over the past ten years. Her movement classes designed especially for Willowwind draw from her many interests and movement experiences. She holds a BA and MFA in dance (DeSales University/University of Iowa) and has taught all ages many movement and dance forms including yoga, ballet, modern, tap, creative movement, the Dancing Classrooms ™ ballroom syllabus, and improvisation. She is delighted to be sharing what she loves and values with Willowwind's students: creativity, focused concentration, curiosity and play, and a deep connection to the intelligence of the body.
*Preschool learners have the choice of enrolling in the Tuesday, Thursday, or both Tuesday and Thursday Movement Class. Enrolling in both weekday classes qualifies for the multi-class discount.
