Agudath Israel of America has commended U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions for issuing a Memorandum clarifying and enhancing religious liberty protections in federal law.

The Attorney General issued the Memorandum on October 6, 2017 in response to an Executive Order from President Trump. As October 6 coincided with Succos, Agudath Israel was not able to respond to it immediately, but wanted to take the first opportunity to thank the Attorney General for this important contribution.

In a letter, authored by Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, Executive Vice President of Agudath Israel, the Orthodox organization thanked the Attorney General for producing “a legal document that staunchly defends the rights of individuals and organizations to receive accommodation for their religious beliefs and observances. It emphasizes the prohibitions in federal law against discrimination against individuals and organizations based on their religious beliefs and observances, and also clarifies the rights of religious organizations to receive government benefits within constitutional bounds.”

The Agudah letter concludes that as “an organization that represents and advocates for the interests of the Orthodox Jewish community in the United States, and for religious liberty for all Americans, Agudath Israel greatly appreciates your work in producing this landmark Memorandum...Our representatives across the country will...surely make good use of it in their advocacy efforts on behalf of the community."
