FLY TYING CLINIC NEWS

from Chad Gage

The December tying clinic was a success. From seasoned tiers, to a hand full of first timers, we had a great turn out.
December tying clinic

The next clinic will be Saturday, January 18th at the William J. Hernandez fish hatchery on Reeve Boulevard from 9am - 3pm. Rich Johnson will be demonstrating hair wing techniques with an emphasis on AFF signature fly, the Alaska Mary Ann. We would lie to have a "themed" table each month. If you have a technique or pattern you would like to share with the club, or have an interest in learning a new fly pattern, please get a hold of me at the email address below with any suggestions.

FISH TALK

 by Bill Hauser

First You Hatch, Then You're Fry

FISH TALK by Bill Hauser

Salmon fry. What do you know about salmon fry? There is a lot more to this than you may think.

Let's begin with a brief overview of a generalized salmon life cycle.

In fact, let's begin the story with the egg. The egg is deposited during summer and incubated through winter until the fish hatch and later become free swimming fry. After some development and growth, they become juveniles called parr or fry until they become smolts that migrate to the ocean. In the ocean, they grow and mature until they migrate back to freshwater to spawn. This sounds easy enough but it is really not so simple. Lots of stuff is going on here.

Monte Williams Volunteer of the Year Award

Project Healing Waters (PHW), sponsored by AFF, announced a new award in honor of Monty Williams who passed away in July.  The Monty Williams Volunteer of the Year Award will be given to a PHW volunteer who demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to the program.  Monty's commitment to PHW included the development of special Medal Flies used as our fund raiser and taught volunteers how to tie the flies. Monte was regularly seen at the weekly tying clinics as well as at his "Man Cave". He lead many trips, and served on the PHW board. Needless to say, along with Monte's veteran status and his countless volunteer hours, Monte was an inspiration to both volunteers and participants.

This year's recipient of the Monte Williams Award is David Rooker. Dave's involvement with PHW was extensive. He established a weekly tying clinic at the Fisher House, volunteered at other tying clinics, assisted with fishing trips, helped with special events, aided in establishing personal contacts with participants, and served on the PHW board service. Please thank Dave for his commitment to the program.
