A Blast from the Past

by Bill Hauser

This summer I was at Quartz Creek minding my own business when a couple of trucks and a crew of about eight people showed up and got to work. Well, of course, I couldn't help myself, I had to investigate. (I am reminded of an old saying. "Work fascinates me... I can sit and watch it all day.") This crew, from the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), came to remove a fish counting weir from the stream. The project leader did not hesitate to explain their operation and provide a tour of the weir. Do recall that I have had a career working for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) and, as it happens, I had co-responsibility for another fish counting weir that operated on Quartz Creek for several years in the early-to-mid 1980's.

Thank You for the Donation to  Project Healing Waters & Alaska Fly Fishers

Eldon (Don) is a disabled Veteran who served in the Air Force in Korea, Japan, and Alaska when it was still a territory, Texas, Wyoming, California and Washington. In 1968, he was tying flies in the window of Van's Sporting Goods Store when Rupp Andrews walked in and asked him to do a TV clip for Fish and Game.  He said "Yes" and teamed up with John Ratterman and Mike Hershberger.  Shortly after, they founded a chapter of the Dame Juliana Berners Fly Fishing Association in Alaska and began teaching others to tie flies and fly fish.  In 1973, they started the Alaska Fly Fishers and Don served as the secretary treasurer.

Don, who started tying flies at age 9, has spent a lifetime fishing and tying flies.  He has collected tying materials and hooks from around the world and has met and worked with some wonderful people in Alaska as well as in other countries.  Due to declining health, Don is no longer able to participate actively in fishing and tying so he is "giving something back" to benefit others.  He has donated a large collection (two pickup truck loads) of fly tying materials/supplies, as well as assorted lines and rod building materials to Project Healing Waters and the Alaska Fly Fishers.  Thank you Eldon for your generous donation.

"The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope."
