Featured Variety:
Baronesse Baronesse is a German variety bred by Tantau in Uterson, close to Hamburg. Tantau has been breeding roses for over 100 years! Among their more recent developments are familiar varieties such as: Charlotte, Freedom, Vendela, Engagement, Akito, Sweet Akito, etc. They also have an extensive line of Garden Roses that decorate the European countryside every summer and fall. After testing many of their garden roses, Baronesse was one of the varieties that we selected for growing in Colombia as a cut garden rose. Baroness is intense pink in color, and has a nostalgic rosette shape. Alas it has no fragrance, but it makes up for this by having a 10-12 day vase life. | Baronesse: Point of cut stage vs 7 day vase stage |
A notable characteristic of this variety is its difference in size as it opens. Its diameter at the point of cut at the farm is a mere 3 cm, but its diameter after 7 days in water is over 10 cm! Baronesse is wonderful as a special event rose when it is fully open because of its romantic shape and color. Bold brides will like its bright pink color. Baronesse is also great for body work when it has not bloomed completely. It is also wonderful for vase work because of its long vase life. Using garden roses in vase work truly differentiates the innovative florist! This is a picture of Baronesse in a garden in Germany! |
| Silver Moments |
Silver Moments Please watch this video showing a new trial variety called Silver Moments bred in Holland. It is a lavender rose with purple edging that has no fragrance and does not open, but is has a striking color and lives over 15 days in the vase. Do you think we should grow this variety commercially? After viewing the video please take a minute and send me an email with your answer to the above question in the title line (yes or no) |
Another quick view of our New Varieties Lab
This video show a series of varieties in the test, or pre-commercial stage. At this point we try to decide whether or not to grow them commercially. We look at shape, color, fragrance, vase life, market potential, productivity, etc. Sometimes we approve new variety just because it is beautiful!
