Alfresco Adventures:
May at The Purple Passport
Greetings!

Welcome to the May 2012 edition of The Purple Passport Newsletter! Read on to find out how you can "Put Your Stamp On The World" this month.

From the Pen of Emily and Jenn

The Purple PassportAs the weather heats up here in Abu Dhabi (we're already at above 100F on May 1!), I can't help but start the countdown to my August trip to New York City. Even though New York will be hot and sticky then too, it'll be considerably cooler than Abu Dhabi. And though I love the Lebanese and Indian restaurants that are my staple here, I can't wait to break out of the current rut and eat at some of my favorite restaurants in New York.

My excitement and anticipation only intensified this week as I put together our Foursquare list of almost 200 top New York City restaurants, all of which have been tested and enthusiastically approved by a member of our team. One might say this is the ultimate list of the very best New York City eating establishments. (Do you agree? Feel free to send your thoughts to jenn.garcia-alonso@thepurplepassport.com).

Of course, I love the classics (not much beats the sophisticated prix fixe lunch at Jean Georges), but I also look forward to indulging in inventive bites like the Japanese fried chicken and fresh homemade tofu at EN Japanese Brasserie and the stool-top tapas with a Batali twist at Casa Mono. My carnivorous cravings will be satisfied with the Shake Shack burger or, better yet, a big Peter Luger steak served "black and blue." For dessert, I'll go with my old standby favorite, the banana pudding from Magnolia Bakery.

For a few more months, I will have to "settle" for shawarmas, chicken tikka, and the like (it's not really settling, as the Lebanese and Indian food in Abu Dhabi is fantastic), but I will be looking longingly at that Foursquare list to help me plan my stateside eating adventures. In other words, I can't wait to cool down and chow down!

Taste and Toast in Tribeca

BubbysJust as the warmer temps of May usher in alfresco dining in New York City, the annual Taste of Tribeca Food Festival brings the best of the Lower Manhattan neighborhood's restaurants to the streets. Now in its 18th year, the one-day culinary street fair raises funds to support arts and enrichment programs for public schools in the area. One ticket buys six tastes from participating restaurants, many of which are Purple Passport favorites.

Meatballs are a hot item at the festival this year: you can sample duck meatballs from champagne bar The Bubble Lounge and lamb meatballs with pecorino from Locanda Verde (Robert DeNiro's Italian restaurant in The Greenwich Hotel). For some unique world flavors, Peruvian-Japanese Nobu New York is offering up chicken karange with green mango-jicama slaw, while German-Austrian Blaue Gans is contributing elderflower sabayon with strawberry and pieplant. Bouley (David Bouley's flagship) and the Tribeca Grand hotel are holding out with "Chef's Surprises." The slick Smyth Tribeca hotel is also getting in on the fun; its brasserie Plein Sud is serving pork and hazelnut rillettes on mini brioche with tomato jam. Don't forget dessert: red velvet cake from Billy's Bakery, rhubarb and apple brown betty from comfort food purveyor Bubby's, and ice cream cones from The Odeon brasserie.

Tribeca MapWhile you're in the neighborhood, be sure to pay a visit to some of our other Tribeca picks. If you have any room in your tummy post-festival (unlikely...but then again you're just getting six "tastes"), the chic Chinese fare at Mr. Chow is definitely worth a trip. If not, end the day with some of the neighborhood's fabulous nightlife, whether it's a microbrew from industrial-cool bar anotheroom, live music at Tokyo jazz bar B Flat, a Far Eastern concoction from sultry lounge Macao Trading Co., or a classic cocktail at sophisticated spirits lounge Brandy Library. They're all great ways to toast Tribeca!

To find all of these Tribeca picks, go to our New York Guide, click "View Full Screen" above the map of New York, type "Tribeca" into the "Center on Address" field, and then zoom in to get a close-up of the neighborhood.

Venue of the Month - Chelsea Physic Garden
Chelsea Physic GardenLondon's Chelsea neighborhood is all abloom in May, when the Chelsea Flower Show opens local gardens overflowing with flowers for public tours. Though it's not an official stop on the flower show circuit, the Chelsea Physic Garden is a must-see for flora fanatics. The garden dates back to the 1600s, when it was used by apothecaries for growing medicinal plants. Horticultural highlights include the largest fruiting olive tree in Britain, the world's northernmost outdoor grapefruit tree, themed flower beds, and of course a wide variety of plants used for therapeutic purposes. After communing with the lush exhibits (don't forget to pack a picnic to feast amid the flowers), you're sure to feel like everything's coming up roses.
