THE VIEW OF THEN FROM NOW
In 1972, I was composing college essays and writing letters (yes, writing letters) on a 1930s typewriter. It was portable, and required some
weight
to depress the keys. But it was what I knew, and no big deal.
Seven years later, I had my first professional job in a public library. Winfield, KS, pop. 11,000…old red brick Carnegie building, with no easy access…my title: Head Librarian. To my amazement, the library had just bought an electric typewriter. I was surprised at how many errors I made because the keys yielded so quickly to touch. Scary.
We were part of a regional system of libraries, as APL is. Twice a year we got an updated microfilm catalog of all books held in system libraries. Hot stuff! But it was outdated as soon as it was created. We would send a loan request for a book at another library, based on what the catalog showed, and might get the reply, “We don’t own that book anymore.” We also received lists of books to order from our biggest vendor; those lists were on microfiche.
No computers, no fax machine—just a public photocopier. No CDs, so our music collection was on vinyl LPs. The selection of LPs was old. Even though I’m a classical music kind of guy, I started purchasing pop and rock music, plus Broadway musicals. Daring.
Large-print books, introduced in England in 1964, were not merely large in print. They could be large in size. Not sure how some older folks—of which I am one, now, or at least my eyes are—held the books in their hands or on their laps. Those books could’ve been made into small table tops.
Of course, I’m talking 1979 here, and I’m not in Kansas anymore.
Alpha Park
is the library celebrating its 45th year as a library district in 2017. What is strange to consider is that, in terms of libraries—what they had and how they functioned—1972 and 1979 wouldn’t have looked that different. In 1972, fewer libraries might have had electric typewriters, public copiers, and large-print books. Nevertheless, the over-all landscape remained the same for those seven years.
Not so now. Computers, electronic books, vanished card catalogs, barcodes and scanners for checking out material, a virtual keyboard (ask about that at the Info Desk), newsletters sent via e-mail, scads of programs for adults and kids, a teen group, meeting and study rooms heavily used, Wi-Fi, Facebook, whew! In 1972, reality was just reality—nothing virtual about it. What you saw was what you got.
What has not changed since ‘72 is APL’s commitment to first-class public service. I don’t mean only the programs we offer, but how we actually (not virtually) treat people. Folks come from elsewhere and say, “We like Alpha Park because the staff is so friendly.” Whatever APL looks like in another 45 years, when I’m 109 years old, I hope we can still say that our patrons come first. Hold us to that—and keep coming back!

FINE POINTS FROM ‘72
When Alpha Park became a district library in 1972, the average price of a house was $27,550; monthly rent for an apartment, $165. The average income was $11,800, and gas averaged 55 cents per gallon, or $3.23 in 2017 dollars. A postage stamp = 8 cents. Bacon, that trendy favorite, rated 83 cents per pound. Finally (most painful of all?), tuition at an IL state university, 1971-1972 academic year, was $396, with room & board totaling $1,043 and books/supplies, $140.

Storytimes are held in six-week sessions throughout the year. Sessions may include books, fingerplays, crafts, songs and games. Children should be the appropriate ages at the first class of each session.

Parents and caregivers with babies aged 12-24 months are invited to the library for songs, books, group play and resource ideas.

News and Notes from the Youth Services Staff
Alpha Park Library staff will visit each 1st grade class in the library district during March as part of a Library Card Round Up tour. First grade students will bring home information about registering for their first library card in February and receive their new cards at a special classroom storytime in March.
In celebration of National Library Week, April 10-16, Alpha Park staff will deliver books to 3 year olds at area preschools during a special storytime. Alpha Park Library hopes to provide a small gift to encourage children as they begin to build a lifelong love of reading.

That would be Friends of Alpha Park Library, and they are true Friends. They run the ongoing book sale, and are planning a BIG book sale for June 16 & 17. Donations of items in fine condition for the BIG sale will be accepted until Monday, May 15. Recently, the Friends bought a new shelving unit for us (not cheap, at $4,500), and helped finance our annual book giveaway for preschool children. The Friends meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. Next dates: March 14 & April 11. All who wish to come will be welcomed.
