Volunteer Spotlight: Alexis Snyder '06
Snyder

Alexis Hair Snyder '06 shares why she volunteers for the admission effort:

Q: As an alumna, why do you think it is important to volunteer for the Office of Admission?

A. My years at Hollins were transformative and really made me into the person I am today. I want to ensure that other young women can experience the kind of personal growth, discovery, and opportunities that I experienced.

Q: Having covered several college fairs, what do you think of the experience?

A: I love talking to young women about Hollins! Many of the students I meet have never heard of Hollins. I usually start with the basics - where we are located, the size of the school, etc. - and then I ask about the student's particular academic and extracurricular interests and provide information on those topics. Some students immediately walk away when they learn that Hollins is a women's college, but many are intrigued by the unique setting and want to know more about our programs. I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for Hollins, and talking with energetic, creative, and motivated young women is a delight. Occasionally I will talk to a student who immediately makes me think, "You would be a perfect fit for Hollins!"

Q: How do you feel that this experience helps keep you involved with campus life?

A: Volunteering with the Office of Admission gives me a great excuse to visit the school website regularly and stay apprised of campus developments: new programs, student accomplishments, awards, and all the exciting things that are always happening at Hollins.

Hollins Alumnae Admission News                           Winter 2013

Greetings from Hollins! While we prepare to welcome our students back from J-term adventures both near and far, the Office of Admission is working steadily to complete applications for the February 1st priority application deadline. As such, below is a snapshot of how your efforts as alumnae and parents have impacted our fall recruitment season.

College Fairs

Alumnae and/or parent presence at 45 college fairs across the nation as alumnae admission volunteers.

Efforts were truly coast-to-coast, with representation in states including Arkansas, California, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia

From these events, 462 students requested additional information about Hollins.

Interested in representing Hollins at a spring 2013 college fair in your area? We are currently seeking volunteers for college fair events across the country. To receive additional information about college fairs in your area, contact Ashley Browning at abrowning@hollins.edu.

Referrals

While 93 alumnae responded to President Gray's request to assist in the year end alumnae referral campaign, current referral figures lag slightly behind those for 2012. Please continue to consider submitting an alumnae referral as you meet young women whom you believe may be a good fit for our community.

Hollinsummer is back

We are excited to share that  Hollinsummer will return to campus in 2013 with several distinct camp experiences designed to celebrate Hollins' strengths. Attendance at Hollinsummer provides an excellent platform to introduce a middle or high school student to Hollins as they begin to consider colleges. Alumnae/i will receive  a 10% discount for their children or grandchildren. Continue to visit the Hollinsummer webpage for additional program updates throughout the spring.

Hampton Roads
Hampton Roads alumnae

On November 29th, the Hampton Roads alumnae chapter opened their holiday party, hosted by Gigi Rawles Miller '79 and her husband Shep, to area prospective students. With a strong Hollins presence, five prospective students enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the university from alumnae, members of our Parents Council, and President Gray. (Pictured, l to r: Rendy Rawls Adams '65, Trisha Rawls '74, Gigi Rawles Miller '79.)

Raleigh

While Brynn Hoffman '09, Betsy Strickland '79, Meredith McLaurin '09, and Ashlea Hitchcock '03 of the Raleigh alumnae chapter weathered low participation from prospective students at their December event, the chapter is on track to re-enliven their outreach efforts. Select alumnae have volunteered as participants in a letter writing campaign designed to encourage North Carolina students to consider making Hollins their home in 2013.

Richmond

Richmond alumnae Ashlee Kneip '06, Taylor Richardson '11, and Kristin Henshaw '94 joined Richmond area prospective students for an evening at the Melting Pot on November 27th. With spring plans to assist in the Office of Admission's Book Award program, Richmond alumnae have quickly discovered how to make their volunteer hours most effective in the area.
