Winter 2012
Thoughts from Alumni Association President
William Gleason, OD '74

Dear alumni,

Before I get to the business at hand, I would first like to recognize the work of Kristen Griebel, OD '97, for her leadership and hard work as the President of the Alumni Association over the last two years.  Kristen will remain on the board of directors as the immediate past president, as well as an active member of the NECO Board of Trustees.

The Alumni Association has gone through several changes over the last five years.  One important change was the elimination of the membership dues.  If you graduated from the Klein School of Optics, MCO, NEWENCO, or NECO, you are an alum of the College and, therefore, a member of the NECO Alumni Association.  We welcome all members to participate in the planned activities and meetings.   In the coming months we will be reaching out to the various classes through identified class representatives to seek input on how we can better serve you as an alumnus/alumna.

One way is by offering four hours of complementary continuing education each year.  This program was initiated in September with the Sunday Morning Breakfast Lecture Series at the 424 Beacon Street location.  Additional Sunday morning lectures were offered in October and November.  If you were one of the 110 alumni who took advantage of the complementary CE, remember you are again eligible for four additional hours beginning in January 2013. Message from Dean Barry M. Fisch, OD '71

Dear alumni,

Just a few weeks ago, the College underwent a joint comprehensive accreditation visit by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE). As you know, the purpose of an accreditation visit is to ensure the education we provide meets the accrediting bodies' established standards. The process of preparing a detailed report and the actual three-day visit by the accreditation team provided an opportunity for me to personally reflect on every aspect of our program. I loved telling our story - who we are, where we have been, where we are currently and where we are going.  [...] click here to read more

Sunday Morning Breakfast Series
Continuing Education Sponsored by the NECO Alumni Association
Attendees fill the lecture hall during the Sunday Morning Breakfast Series.
The NECO Alumni Association has continued its tradition of providing engaging and timely continuing education at the College. Two lectures were offered at the November 4th program, both focused on anterior segment conditions. Eighty participants, mostly alumni, attended the November program and broke all attendance records for the series, in large part because both lectures addressed issues that are important in primary eye care practice.

Class of 1977 Reunion
At a reception on Friday, November 2nd, President Clifford Scott welcomed back members of the Class of 1977 and their guests to the New England College of Optometry to celebrate their 35th Reunion. Two significant photographs of the class were on display during the reception, one taken during their school years on the balcony of the College and one at their 30th Reunion.

Reunion events continued into the weekend with a tea on Saturday afternoon to meet and mingle with current NECO students, and a dinner at Legal Sea Foods.  Several alumni stayed for the Sunday Morning Breakfast Series continuing education program with Drs. Santiago Villazon, Kristen Brown, and Joseph Shovlin.
Class of 1977 Celebrates Their 35th Reunion

If your class year ends in the number 8 or the number 3, you are coming up on an anniversary year.

Example:

Class of 2008 = 5 year anniversary

Class of 2003 = 10 year anniversary

Reunions are planned by class members, with the support of the Office of Institutional Advancement.  If you are interested in planning a reunion for your class, please contact Jo Ann Gershaw at 617-587-5607 or gershawj@neco.edu.

Profiles in Vision 2012

On October 12, 2012, NECO held its third Profiles in Vision gala at the Boston Fairmont Copley Hotel, raising over $55,000 to benefit student scholarships and New England Eye's vision services for the underserved throughout the Commonwealth. The evening program honored two remarkable individuals, Rick Guidotti and Peter Ash for their humanitarian work, as well as the College and New England Eye for their work with individuals with disabilities. Susan Wornick, WCVB-TV news anchor, hosted the evening's festivities. Over 175 guests enjoyed an elegant reception, music and lavish raffle prizes.

Dr. Clifford Scott awarded Presidential Medals to Peter Ash, founder of Under the Same Sun, and Rick Guidotti, founder of Positive Exposure. Mr. Ash spoke about the plight of persons with albinism living in Tanzania and facing violent discrimination, and Mr. Giudotti drew attention through his photography to the beauty inherent in people's genetic differences. Their presentations were both heartfelt and inspiring; Moved by their passionate remarks, attendees responded generously to Ms. Wornick's call to further support student scholarships and community eye care. The evening was a great success, in terms of both raising funds and enjoying a wonderful night with friends and colleagues.

Meet Laura, a First Year Student

"My name is Laura and I am a member of the class of 2016 at NECO. Originally from New Jersey, I graduated from Lafayette College with a double major in biology and German. During my four years at Lafayette, I was involved in research on vision-related responses of turtle eyes. This project has led me to pursuing optometry at NECO. In addition, I love learning about new people and places. During my junior year, I studied abroad in Germany at the University of Würzburg, which was an amazing experience! In an increasingly global economy, I like to encourage other students to embrace many cultures and customs. The field of optometry provides exciting opportunities to improve vision in all people, no matter where they may live."
