The Passion Didn't Die
By Viki Rife

Amanda Swain's very first memory is of riding on her dad's shoulders. She treasures that memory in a special way, because he died three days after her fourth birthday. "I remember him smiling as we played Pin-the-Tail-on-the-Donkey at my birthday party," she reminisces.

Her father, Tom Sharp, was passionate about missions. In fact, her parents, Tom and Sue (Battis) Sharp, were serving as missionaries to Mexico when Amanda was born. At two-and-a-half, Amanda became ill with what was finally diagnosed as a rare liver ailment. She had a nine-hour surgery at San Diego Children's Hospital, the first of its kind done there. Her mother was seven months pregnant with the family's third child, Ben, at the time.

Ben was only ten days old when Tom's doctor told him his chronic Crohn's disease had turned into colon cancer. He was given a few months to live. The family moved back to Ohio to be closer to family.

"My dad refused to just sit in the hospital and die," observes Amanda. He was determined to stay strong, and lived over a year more than expected. The family settled in Bellville, near Tom's parents, and Sue attended Ashland College for her master's degree. "She would take me to classes. I sat on the floor and ate gummy bears," Amanda remembers. ( continue )

Mom to Mom: Harder Than It Has To Be
By Kate Ward

Being a mom, I hear myself saying things over and over to my kids. One of those phrases is "don't make things harder than they have to be." Whether this involves trying to brush your teeth
while you tie your shoes, or not reading directions before you start your homework, there is just an easier way to do things. But like all the "wise" words we say over and over, how do we get them to really mean something to our kids?

Titus 2 Corner
"Women Discipling Women"

Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior. They are to teach what is good and so train the young women..... Titus 2:3-4

We've heard this many times. We know it is our privilege and responsibility. Still, many of us struggle to make it a reality. Over the next few months, we hope to share resources and practical tips to help you take the next step in discipling others.

Suggested Resource:

In
A Friend in Me, Pam Lau shows you how to be a safe place for the younger women in your life. She offers five patterns women need to internalize and practice for initiating relationships and talking about issues such as faith, forgiveness, sexuality, and vocation. Most significantly, she reminds you that there doesn't need to be a divide between generations of women. Together, we can have a global impact-and experience a deeper faith than we've ever known.

Tip: Invite a younger woman to join you for coffee. Ask her questions about her life and share about yours. Resist the urge to give her answers and just listen to her heart. Commit to praying for her.

Prayer Watch

"How's Your Throne Life?"
When you became a daughter of God, your Father granted you access to enter the very throne-room of Christ, not just to beg for selfish favors from the King, but to participate with Him in doing Kingdom work. You now see things from God's sovereign perspective.

As one seated together in the heavenly places with Christ Jesus, you are beckoned to share in His mission through praying for His will and then doing all you can do to fulfill the prayer. "Put God's will, God's Word and prayer in constant priority, being quick to obey what he wants" (Wesley Duewell, Mighty Prevailing Prayer, 206). Throne room praying thanks Him for answering your heart's desires, which turn out to have been God's in the first place. It is at this place we become an answer to Jesus' prayer: "Father, make them one as You and I are one that the world may believe."

Throne living is what motivated the Groenewalds to leave their comfortable South African home to obey God's call to serve the Afghani people. This resulted in laying down their lives for the sake of Jesus and His gospel. Assurance of God's greater purpose helped Hannalie endure the pain of losing her husband and children to their persecutors. (Voice of the Martyrs Newsletter, Nov. 2016).

"Beautiful Investment"
 by Viki Rife
This year we replaced our 20-year-old living room carpet with a wood floor. Every time I stop and admire the beauty of the different grains and shades of the wood, I wonder why we didn't invest in the change sooner.

That investment in beauty pales, though, compared with the investment we each can make in helping women develop a beautiful heart that glorifies God. Every penny spent to develop women so they can be a light in this world is worth the sacrifice. We invite you to invest in our Trellis with a monthly donation of $15 or more. We promise that your investment will be used to inspire women to seek God with all their heart.
