February is
American Heart Month!

February is American Heart Month, a time to show yourself the LOVE!!!

Learn about your risks for heart disease and stroke and stay "heart healthy" for yourself and your loved ones.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure, is the number one killer of women and men in the United States. It is a leading cause of disability, preventing Americans from working and enjoying family activities.

You can control a number of risk factors for CVD, including:

  • Diet
  • Physical activity
  • Tobacco use
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • High blood cholesterol
  • Diabetes

As you begin your journey to better heart health that can last a lifetime, keep these things in mind:

  • Try not to become overwhelmed!  Every step brings you closer to a healthier heart, and every healthy choice makes a difference!
  • Partner up.  The journey is more fun and often more successful when you have company.  Ask friends and family to join you.
  • Don't get discouraged!  You may not be able to take all of the steps at one time.  Get a good night's sleep (also important for a healthy heart) and do what you can tomorrow.
  • Reward yourself!  Find fun things to do to decrease your stress...Round up some colleagues for a lunchtime walk, join a singing group, or have a healthy dinner with your family or friends.

Try out these strategies for better heart health. You'll be surprised how many of them can become lifelong habits!

Triple Berry Kale Salad
with Fresh Strawberry Vinaigrette

Berries are amazing for your heart! They block oxidation and plaque growth and can help improve artery function. Enjoy "nature's candy" with this delicious heart-healthy salad we found on howsweeteats.com!

Ingredients (serves 4):

Salad:
  • 1 head of curly kale, leaves removed from stem and torn

  • 1 cup fresh tart cherries, pitted & sliced
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup fresh blackberries
  • 1 cup sliced strawberries
  • 1 avocado, chopped
  • 2/3 cup chopped toasted almonds
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Fresh Strawberry Vinaigrette:

  • 3/4 cup sliced fresh strawberries
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch pepper
  • 1 pinch cinnamon

Combine all vinaigrette ingredients together in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.

Place kale in a large bowl, and add about 1/4 cup of the strawberry vinaigrette. Massage and rub dressing into kale with your hands, then let the kale sit for 5-10 minutes.

Add in salt, pepper, cherries, berries and avocado, then add a few more tablespoons of dressing and toss. Finish by topping with chopped almonds.
