A Hero Raised by an Angel in Disguise
|
Harmony & Yeahsen Photography by Liz Kaye
|
"It's a beautiful day and the sun is shining.
But, he sits alone, a little boy in the dark.
His mind is something he can't control.
He is up all night, he can't settle down to sleep.
His mind is like a prison."
Words written by the mother of our client Yeahsen - a twelve-year-old boy who is profoundly deaf and has autism. Last June, Yeahsen was placed with a beautiful service dog named Harmony.
"It's a beautiful day and the sun is shining.
She has to get up earlier than everyone else, there's a puppy that needs her.
She does the hard work, she has the patience.
She has the hope that someday, this puppy will be a Hero.
She is our Angel in Disguise."
Shannon, Harmony's trainer, understands Yeahsen's journey. She said "In many ways, the prison I live in is no different than the one he lives in. We are secluded, we feel helpless and isolated, we live in constant fear and uncertainty....but when I was able to provide Yeahsen with Harmony - knowing she was going to help him and provide unconditional love, hope began to break down all those walls. For hi and for me as well." Shannon is Yeahsen's Angel in Disguise.
Before Harmony appeared in Yeahsen's world, he would not go outside to play. In desperation his mother would physically carry him outdoors, only for him to turn around and run back inside. Her heart would break as she was unsure how to give her little boy some normalcy. She was unsure how to release him from his prison of fear and uncertainty.
A few weeks after Harmony's arrival, Yeahsen declared after dinner, "It's time to take Harmony for her walk!" The walk led to a small playground where two neighborhood boys were playing. Normally, Yeahsen would not stop to play if other kids were there, but this particular night he felt brave. Read more to learn what happened...

2014 A DOG-GONE GOOD YEAR
|
|
ICAN furlough volunteers attend Boot Camp, taught by ICAN's inmate handlers, during ICAN's team training.
|
What a year it has been for ICAN! We started off with Puppy Love Valentines in which nearly 500 Valentine's gift boxes were delivered throughout the city. At the same time we kicked off Puppy Love Year Round which has been growing strong! In April, we had a special Dog Art Day at the two Pendleton correctional facilities where our dogs-in-training and their handlers did nearly 100 pieces of dog art. ICAN's Golf Outing in July was a big success and we were fortunate to have some cooler weather from previous years. We were also able to feature Alpine and Kash's beautiful litter of Golden Retrievers at the outing. At June's graduation, we placed 13 dogs to some very happy clients! We also took part in the Celebrity Softball game at Victory Field, an event sponsored by NASCAR driver Tony Stewart, in which a dozen of our dogs helped raise money for the Indiana Wish Fund. In July, we had an awesome team of Boy Scouts from local Troop 133 put down grass seed for our dog run, empty one storage room, move supplies to a new one, and built shelving for our storage room. It was a VERY busy month in August for two of our Golden Retrievers, Holly and Jamie. On August 11th, Holly gave birth to eleven beautiful Golden-Labrador puppies. Six days later, Jamie gave birth to eight more! Handsome yellow Labrador Forrest was the daddy of both litters and he is from the Paws with a Purpose program - another prison program - in Louisville, Kentucky. In October, lots of great things took place. We had the opportunity to be involved in two Lilly Day of Service projects in which Lilly employee's helped socialize our six week old pups. Then, we had 17 puppies from all three litters spreading puppy love to more than 400 guests at our annual Wine & Wags fundraiser! It was a huge success as all 17 puppies received sponsors that evening, and we raised close to $125,000 in donations and pledges! Also in October, another Dog Art Day was held at the Indiana Women's Prison in which staff members from the Tony Stewart Foundation (TSF) participated with our handlers. We were able to provide them dog art canvasses for their Foundation and ICAN. A very special naming ceremony was held in November in which Mayor Ballard named one of Jamie's pups, Renn, in memory of fallen Officer Perry Renn, who died in the line of duty. Renn will carry on the legacy of Officer Renn's love for animals and the contributions he made to the Indianapolis community. The year ended with a very special graduation in which ICAN placed six more dogs to some very special clients. ICAN brings hope. Our dogs bring hope to inmate handlers in three Indiana correctional facilities; and through the training of these dogs, the handlers bring hope to children and adults living with a disability. It is our Goal to raise $25,000 before 2015! Your contribution, whatever amount, will help us reduce the wait list for our clients. ICAN, YOU CAN, WE CAN bring Hope to Others. Each dollar will take us one step closer to making that happen! Please DONATE today! May the year 2015 be another great year of growth, generous support and placing more dogs with applicants in wait. The staff of ICAN and the ICAN Board of Directors wish you a very Happy Holiday and New Year! Thank you for supporting ICAN. We couldn't do it without you!

4th ANNUAL PUPPY LOVE VALENTINES
|
|
For the 4th year in a row, our dogs and volunteers will be traveling throughout the greater Indianapolis area delivering Valentine Gift Boxes to individuals at work, schools, hospitals and nursing homes! What a better way to treat a friend, co-worker, loved one, relative to a special Puppy Love Valentines delivery! We have lots of new goodies in store for next year's gift box and several options to choose from. Better yet, to stay on schedule, Indianapolis Yellow Cab is a proud sponsor of Puppy Love Valentines and they will be helping us make some of those deliveries! In addition to individual deliveries, we can also arrange to deliver to your workplace a bulk order of gift boxes (30 or more) at a reduced price, plus provide some furry tail visits with your co-workers!
Become a Sponsor of Puppy Love Valentines! We are always looking for individuals and companies to help sponsor our event just like Indianapolis Yellow Cab is doing. Monetary donations or in-kind, we can use your help to absorb the cost of this big event. Lots of baking involved, so we are always looking for bulk baking supplies! Special gifts to include in the box are welcomed too! If you are interested in supporting Puppy Love Valentine's, please contact Dino at [email protected] or 317-672-3864. To place an order, please be sure to visit our website after January 10th.
