An Unlikely Newsletter
April 12, 2017

Independent Bookstore Day is a one-day national party that takes place at indie bookstores across the country on Saturday, April 29th.  Every store is unique and independent, and every party is different. There are exclusive books and literary items that you can get only n that day. Not before. Not after. Not online.

Independent bookstores are not just stores, they're community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that lend themselves to serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal equals a day well spent.

In a world of tweets and algorithms and pageless digital downloads, bookstores are not a dying anachronism.  They are living, breathing organisms that continue to grow and expand. In fact, there are more of them this year than there were last year. And they are at your service!

Shrill
Shrill
by Lindy West

West tells her truth by using humor to invite the readers into her world. The feminist lens West uses uncovers societal norms and re-frames issues in a new direction. Some stories will have you laughing and others may bring tears.

Chester and Gus
Chester and Gus
by Cammie McGovern

This is a book that everyone can appreciate. Chester, an aspiring service dog, takes us on his journey of living with Gus, an eleven-year-old boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The typical "man's best friend" bond is frequently tested and takes more time to build, helping Chester and the reader better understand the challenges and wonders of living with Autism.  (Ages 8+)
