Alexa recommends:
A wonderful insightful saga of the interconnection of two families. The descriptive and often unexpected twists and turns pulled me into their lives fully. I loved every minute of reading!
Lynda recommends:
Welcome back to Three Pines, a small village in Quebec that appears on no map, and is home to Armand Gamache, his wife, Reine-Marie, and an eclectic group of neighbors. Gamache, former Head of Homicide for the Surete du Quebec, has accepted the position of Commander at the Surete Academy, where the misappropriation of building funds is suspected and an unusually high percentage of the graduates entering the Surete are harsh and cruel, scheming and undermining. Shortly into the term, a professor is murdered and professors, cadets and even the Commander are all suspects. Back in Three Pines, an old orienteering map is discovered...the village and several random objects carefully depicted. Gamache entices four cadets from the Academy to decipher the map's clues and discover its secret.
Michelle recommends:
A compelling WWII thriller that grips the reader from the moment she opens the front cover. Nathan Blum has escaped the ghettos of Poland where his family has been brutally murdered for being Jewish. He's now an intelligence officer in Washington. Dr. Mendl is a renowned physics professor with the secret for completing a bomb that could end the war, but is trapped in Aushwitz, where the Nazis have burned all his years of research. Blum volunteers to go back into the heart of hatred, to break into the notorious death camp and escape with Dr. Mendl. Will Blum make it in? Will they both make it out alive? This is a deeply emotional and engrossing story inspired by events in Gross's family history.
Leo recommends:
by Jennifer L. Holm
A kid's-eye-view of the Depression set in Key West, Florida where likeable Beans Curry collects cans, plays marbles, and soon gets involved in a scheme with a rum runner in this prequel to Turtle in Paradise. Great characters, humor, and plenty of heart! (Ages 8-12)
