Addressing North Korea and the World
Civitas Think Tank Project #1

The current situation between North Korea and the rest of the world seems so complicated that many people just want to give up. To others, it's simple: "bomb them back to the stone age."

Reality is somewhere in between. But figuring out what options the United States, South Korea, Japan, China and the rest of the world have requires research and brainstorming. Addressing this issue will be the focus of the first Civitas Think Tank Project.

We'll gather this Saturday morning, September 23, from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at the Civitas office ( map) to study some digestible research on the relevant issues. We'll work in small groups to present information in a way to others that makes sense. Then we'll divide into other groups to consider what options for action (or inaction) might exist, and what impact they would have on individual nations and the world as a whole.

We'll talk about nukes, sanctions, bluffing, psychological profiles of leaders and a host of other factors. Role-playing will be involved. You can sign up by clicking here.

NOTE:
For students who sign up to attend the Crisis in North Korea and the College Workshop, Civitas will provide lunch between the events.

Civitas Sponsors Special Workshop on College Admissions and Financial Aid

Crossroads College Prep School College Counselor Beth Brasel will host a special Civitas workshop on college admissions and financial aid. This is obviously a big issue for many students who are active in Civitas programs. Beth's workshop is not intended to be in lieu of the counseling that students receive at their own high schools, but rather as a valuable supplement.

NOTE: This event is unique for Civitas -- an afternoon one, from 1:00 - 3:00 PM, this Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Civitas office (map).
For students who sign up to attend the Crisis in North Korea and the College Workshop, Civitas will provide lunch between the events.

Like so many Civitas activities, it is one which will be relaxed and where  all questions are welcome. You can come if you're a senior who may be applying to college this year or a freshman for whom college is still several years off. You can sign up by clicking here.
High School Model UN Country Draft a week from Saturday

You can't have a Model United Nations without students representing countries. One hundred ninety-three countries will be up for grabs a week from Saturday, Sept. 30, when students and teachers gather for the 2017-18 country draft.

The draft is at the Creve Coeur Government Center (Multipurpose Room on Lower Level); 300 No. New Ballas Road; 63141 (map) from 9:00 - 11:00 AM. We will also have an introductory workshop to Model UN with special remarks from Dr. Robert Barnidge who teaches at Chaminade College Preparatory School.

It's important to know how the country draft works, so you can learn the simple process by clicking here.

First Pulitzer Journalist of 2017-18:
Stephanie Hanes on "White Man's Game" in Mozambique

Civitas and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting are very pleased to announce the fall Global Gateway outreach program to students and teachers in St. Louis.  Stephanie Hanes will be coming to St. Louis, October 10 - 13.

In 2007, Hanes was the first journalist to come to St. Louis as part of Pulitzer's Global Gateway program. She reported about the remarkable story of the restoration of the Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique.

Since that time, there have been significant changes. In Stephanie's 2017 book, " White Man's Game: Saving Animals, Rebuilding Eden and Other Myths of Conservation in Africa
," she tells us of the many changes; some positive and some not so good. In preparation for her visit, you can read a condensed version by clicking here

Students at thirteen schools will hear Stephanie's story. Click here to Stephanie's schedule of school visits.

You may also want to view Stephanie's "Ted Talk" on the current state of journalism. It is available by clicking here.
CIV-TRIV
Civitas Trivia on Friday the 13th

Who was the first US President to be born in the United States? [Spoiler alert: Martin Van Buren] That's a question we WON'T be asking at the Civitas Trivia Night, on Friday, October 13, 2017, because we just told you the answer. But there are lots more where that came from-and they're not all about presidents or history, or the United Nations, or stuff you need to know for the ACT.

We're putting together an evening that we hope will challenge you to dig trivial facts out of the corners of your brain, and have fun with friends while you're doing that. We'll supply the quizzes, the games, the free pizza and sodas, and the prizes. You supply the brainpower.

It's free! It's not a fund-raiser; it's all about fun.

You can sign up individually, or put together a team of four friends.

St. Louis Homicide Detective Mark Biondolino to speak at Civitas on Saturday, October 14

What is life like for a homicide detective in a major American city? In particular, what is it like in St. Louis now with discord between police and some of our citizens?

Detective Mark Biondolino has served in the Homicide Division of the St. Louis Police Department for seven years. Prior to that he worked in the narcotics division, and prior to that, he was a policeman on the beat.

He has a very calming presence and has excellent stories to tell as well as ideas on improving life in our community. He'll also answer any questions you might have about life on the police force in St. Louis.

Detective Biondolino is our speaker on Saturday, October 14, at Civitas ( map) from 9:00 - 11:00 AM. You can sign up by clicking here.
