Summer 2016
Dear Friend:

This year, VLJ celebrates our 15th anniversary and the partnerships we have developed over the years that enable us to provide top quality legal services to and for NJ's most vulnerable populations.

In 2015 alone, 4,385 people were assisted by VLJ lawyers who contributed more than $2,200,000 worth of free legal services. Our clients have included veterans, children deprived of educational services to which they are entitled, and victims of sex trafficking to name a few.

We are proud that we have significantly improved the lives of thousands of economically disadvantaged adults, children, and families in NJ and we could not have done it without you!  We hope that the articles in this month's newsletter inspire you to become involved with VLJ and that you can  join us on November 14, 2016 at the NJPAC for our 15th Anniversary Power of Partnerships Celebration

Sincerely,

Karen B. Sacks, Esq.
Founding Executive Director
The Power of One

The billable hour is a staple of law firm economics and now VLJ is harnessing the power of one billable hour for a fundraiser marking VLJ's 15th anniversary.

VLJ is asking lawyers at 150 New Jersey firms to donate the cash equivalent of "Just One" billable hour to help fund legal services for our low-income clients across the state.

All donors will be acknowledged as Champions of Justice on VLJ's website, in its annual report, and in other publicity surrounding the campaign.

Law firms with the highest participation rates by the end of the campaign (on September 30, 2016) will be similarly feted, designated as a Leader in Justice, and recognized at VLJ's anniversary gala in November.

Attorney Spotlight: Suzanne Klar (PSEG)

Suzanne M. Klar is an example of how one person can spark beneficial and lasting change-in this case, for veterans.  In 2013, the PSEG associate general litigation counsel approached Volunteer Lawyers for Justice about a broader pro bono role by attorneys in her company's legal department.  A VLJ board member since 2008, Suzanne had been focused on pro bono work for years. In particular, she noticed that veterans and active service members had critical legal needs.

#Soiree4abrighterday

Bullying strikes the most vulnerable members of society, and often leaves children and their parents feeling they have nowhere to turn. VLJ comes to the aid of these children by providing them with lawyers through our Children's Representation Program. To support that program, Generation Now, VLJ's young professionals committee, hosted an event to raise needed funds for anti-bullying legal services.

The Summer Soiree to Stop Bullying was held on June 8th at the Essex Fells Country Club and the event raised over $21,000 for the Children's Representation Program.  The event also raised awareness about bullying and featured long-time VLJ volunteer attorney, Majorie Chertok, as a speaker.

Generation Now welcomes young professionals interested in supporting VLJ, through networking and fundraising events.  If you would like to join the Generation Now committee please contact VLJ staff attorney, Jessica Limbacher at [email protected]

Congratulations,
Gemma Giantomasi!

VLJ congratulates VLJ Board of Trustee member Gemma Giantomasi on her receipt of the NJSBA Young Lawyers Division Community Service Award!  She is one of VLJ's most enthusiastic supporters of pro bono work and no one is more deserving of this honor!
Spotlight on Service: Bruce Meyer

Bruce Meyer is a computer engineer and analyst who lends his pro bono expertise to Volunteer Lawyers for Justice from behind the scenes-1,600 miles away in Willis, Texas, in fact.

Even after his family moved there from New Jersey in 2013, Bruce continued to volunteer with VLJ. Bruce provides all manner of IT assistance-connecting computers to servers, retrieving lost documents, deciphering error messages and taking on other tasks which would otherwise cost VLJ a great deal.
