Hello Everyone:

Since I have a lot of new readers -- I would like to welcome and thank those on facebook.com for reading my e-newsletter.  For those of you who don't know it --last year I stopped my bi-weekly empowerment e-newsletter/newswire service "The National Black Agenda Online" that I had been publishing for over 13 years.

I stopped the e-newsletter because it was too time-consuming and I wanted to be in a better position to put my energy into launching several campaigns such as the "National Non-GMO Health Movement," "Let's Read Campaign" and now "Campaign to Elect Honest Politicians."

Today I am doing something that a year or two ago I would have just walked away from.  I am getting involved into politics again.  If you ask me why --I would tell you any of the number of reasons:

  • I see several potential great candidates that I feel can help turn the community around.
  • I am sick and tired of what is happening in the community and I fully understand that it will take a political and economic movement to change the community.
  • As a Health and Wellness Expert, I have never felt better in my life and want to share my knowledge and expertise with others on how they can continue to live their lives on purpose while they look great, feel great and live great.

For more empowerment tools join my mailing list at www.CathyHarrisSpeaks.com or www.AngelsPress.com and send this newsletter to everyone you know.

As a business owner, community organizer and advocate, Cathy spent tiredness years working in the community in Atlanta, GA and nationally when she became a nationally recognized whistleblower "The Cathy Harris Story" (www.TheCathyHarrisStory.com).

As a former prison advocate and after being absent from political activism to work on building a successful business, Cathy feels this is the year for her to get back involved and help educate the community on just how much power they really have.  Her goal with the release of the new book and the campaign is to educate the community on how politics really work and that they have the power to remove bad politicians out of office and elect good ones who truly speak for the people.

The number one issue that most people don't understand is that if there is an issue that has them hopping mad and if they can do a better job than the people who represent them -then they just should not sit there but help fix the problem by running for office.

For instance, the prison industrial complex is big business and a new form of slavery. Prisons feed the construction companies, architectural firms, white prison guards, etc.  Many prisoners are moved to smaller cities and then counted by the Census.gov as part of that area --which is illegal --but this is how those areas get extra funding for their communities.

Another reason for the massive incarceration rate in this country is that the people being jailed are not part of the political system.  They don't vote and are not knowledgeable about issues in the community.  People don't understand if they were wrongfully jailed and not convicted of a crime, they can still vote!  We need to introduce legislation in every state to allow felons to vote.  We need aggressive campaigns to register voters especially felons.

A few years back Cathy was asked to run for the Congress and the Senate as both a 'Democrat' and 'Republican' even though she never had any political aspirations.  As a business owner, community organizer and advocate, she feels it's her job to assist others who she thinks would do a good job.

Many people are not a big fan of the political season but they need to realize it's here and right in our faces so we have to deal with it whether we want to or not.  It's going to take both political and economic empowerment to change the community.  Whether you are a veteran politician running for office or someone just starting out - Cathy's book has all the ins and outs of how politics really work and how to win your political seat -- while you uplift, educate, and empower your community.

Top 5 Steps to Take To Prepare for the Upcoming Political Season

1.    Get Healthy: Too many activists and advocates especially political activists have died trying to help 'ethical' politicians get elected into office and many politicians have died while in office because they put the community before themselves.  Remember your motto should be "Self, Family, Community" -so get healthy by reading my health book "How To Take Control of Your Own Life: A Self-Help Guide to Becoming Healthier Over the Next 30 Days."

2.    Get on President Obama's Mailing List:  Support President Obama by joining his mailing list at www.BarackObama.com and tell others to join --so you can read emails coming from the Obama camp. Obama or Romney - you decide...

3.    Find Out Who Represents You:  Go to www.Congress.org and put in your zip code to see all the legislators who represent you in your district.  There should be "Legislative Watchdog Groups" formed to monitor ALL elected officials.  Community groups or individuals can put together a website with elected officials' voting records.  It's important not to just email, call, fax, or mail their offices.  Everyone should visit these offices and monitor what legislation they are introducing or voting on.

4.    Attend Local Meetings:  Attend local meetings of the NAACP (www.NAACP.org), Rainbow PUSH (www.RainbowPush.org), and National Action Network (www.NationalActionNetwork.net).  Most of these groups will have their own "Get Out the Vote Campaigns" where they will be actively registering people to vote.  You can also become a volunteer with them.  Remember you don't have to be members to attend their meetings but most memberships run from $30 a year -$10 if you are under 21.  Find out if there were any activist groups out there monitoring your elected officials in Legislative Watchdog Groups and have report cards on their performances. How did they vote?  What bills did they introduce?  If there were no groups in your city doing this -then start at the next General Assembly in your city.

5.    Get Active: Get active by becoming an "activist" or "advocate" for upcoming campaigns by speaking out against those politicians who are not deserving of your votes and support those who are.  Politicians are leaders!  A good leader should not have any conflicts of interest, either politically (beholden to some group) or monetarily (for sale if the price is right). A leader who has conflicts of interest should step down or be removed, because the mission of the group or movement can be slanted, diverted, delayed, and, ultimately not achieved.

Cathy Harris Launches

"Campaign to Elect Honest Politicians"

The goal of this campaign is to select honest candidates from all over the country who we feel would do a good job as a politician and expose others who have only used their offices as a political gain while ignoring the suffering in the community.

To do this we are asking everyone to help spread the word on these campaigns by reaching out to your family members, friends and colleagues --especially those on Facebook.com, Twitter.com, Linkedin.com, Ning.Com, Yahoogroups.com, etc. and other social networking sites -- and ask them to donate $1, $5 or more to these campaigns and tell others who live in the area of the candidates to volunteer.

Once they are elected to office:

·         We will form "Legislative Watchdog Groups" with report cards to monitor the bills they are introducing and the bills they are voting on.  If they are not supportive of the community endeavors which will uplift the masses -then we will place their names on "blacklists" and vote them out of office during the next political season.

·         We will form "Black Political Action Committees" to make sure they get what they need to assist the community.

·         We will form lobbyist groups in Washington to deal with Congress.

Why 5th District Commissioner Lee May Doesn't Deserve My Vote

June 2, 2012

By Syndicated Columnist Cathy Harris

Political season is here and as much as most of us don't want to hear about it -it's right in our faces.  Soon many 'unethical' politicians who have been in hiding for the past couple of years or more --will surface to try to win their seats again.

Like others I am not a big fan of this season.  But it's time for us to open our eyes and really look at the 'big picture' and look at the power we have to put good politicians into office and vote bad politicians out.  For instance let's look at my Commissioner Lee May, my representative from District 5 in Dekalb County, GA, which is one of the largest and most affluent African-American communities in this country.

Commissioner Lee May is the youngest person in the history of DeKalb County, GA, government to be elected to serve on the Board of Commissioners http://www.co.dekalb.ga.us/boc. He was elected into office back in 2006.  Everyone said let's support him because he was young.  We thought he would take the seat and get a mentor and do a good job for us.  But that did not happen!

Let's look at the type of mentors he has in his life.  As a son of a pastor himself and a member of the mega church New Birth, May did not choose to walk away from the church when it was proven that Bishop Eddie Long, molested young boys.  So what does that tell you about Lee May and his plans to assist other young black men and others in his district?

As a Commissioner, Lee May serves as the Deputy Presiding Officer of the Board of Commissioners, Chairman of the Budget & Finance Committee and a member on the Public Safety and General Safety Committee and oversees a $1 billion budget.

On the Finance, Audit, & Budget (FAB) Committee he reviews the Chief Executive Officer's (CEOs) proposed budget in accordance with the Organizational Act and makes recommendations on the budget and related policies prior to its final adoption by the Board of Commissioners. This Committee also has the authority to review and recommend any items that affect revenues or expenditures that cross different subject areas. General departments and areas over which this Committee will have oversight are Debt Services Funds, Finance Department, Property Appraisal, and the Tax Commissioner.

Lee May is an influential voice in setting the county's annual spending plan but has racked up nearly $1 million of personal debt after a series of bankruptcies.  His debts include a $35,000 loan from the DeKalb Enterprise Business Corporation, a nonprofit affiliated with the county that makes small business loans.  Records show May paid just $8,500 of that money back before defaulting.

Court records show that Lee May used his southeast DeKalb home and his parents' home in Arizona to come up with the $250,000 needed to open the 8-screen Cinefe theater at Panola Road and Covington Highway in 2005.  The DEBCO loan and small investors also helped with the purchase.

The business struggled from the start.  County tax records show May didn't pay his 2006 and 2007 business property taxes until 2008.  Shortly after he covered the $3,500 payments, he closed the theater. Lee May first filed bankruptcy then agreed to court-ordered payments to repay his debt.  His $38,000 salary as a county commissioner was 'GARNISHED' to pay back the nearly $850,000 owed for his purchase of the business and rent for the space.

Salary 'GARNISHMENTS' also were set to repay $79,500 in student loans and $700 in federal taxes, according to county records.  Everyone knows if you neglect to send in student loan payments for nine  (9) months, you are technically in default.  If anyone default on student loans, the government can take their income tax; Garnish their wages (10 to 15%; Take them to court; and they might not be able to renew a professional license.

In this case let this professional license be a seat on the Board of Commissioners.  I don't know about you but I am uncomfortable having Lee May sit on one of the most powerful seats in the county but he can't even pay his own bills.  Six years is long enough. By reelecting Lee May to this position again --we will send all politicians a strong message - that we, the taxpayers, don't care what they do!  But now moreso than ever in this fallen economy, we need to send a strong message, starting with not reelecting Lee May, that we are watching what they are doing and we will vote them out of office.

Not only should Lee May lose his seat because of his financial woes but keep in mind that this commissioner and his staff NEVER answers or returns phone calls, emails or allows taxpayers, his constituents, to set up appointments to meet with him. So he is not "ACCESSIBLE" to the people he represent.

During the last politician season, Katesha Sagers-Aguayo, former Miss Black Georgia 2004, made an attempt to run for this seat, but was unsuccessful.  She said the only reason she ran for the seat was the fact that Lee May NEVER returned her, her family members and friends in the district phone calls, emails or allowed them to set up appointments to meet with him.

Politicians are leaders and the number one trait for a good leader is "honesty" and a good leader should be financially accountable especially in his own life.  Let's face it -Lee May is a lousy politician and business owner and this is not a person we want our kids to follow -so I strongly urge everyone to vote Lee May out of office.

I am putting all my support behind Publisher Andre White who along with his family has successfully run a local newspaper, the Georgia Sentinel (www.tsn360.com), for over 20 years.  Most newspaper publishers and editors have their hands on the pulse of the people and the community and this is why we should put all our support behind Andre White.  Her motto is "Putting People First" and I believe he can deliver!

We are urging everyone to go to Andre White's website at www.ElectAndreWhite.com and make a donation --even if it is as little as $1 or $5 --and volunteer for his campaign and tell your family members, friends, and colleagues who live in District 5 which include area codes --Conley, GA 30288, Decatur, GA 30032, 30034, 30035, Ellenwood, GA 30294, Lithonia, GA 30038, 30058 and Stone Mountain, GA 30083, 30088 to make a donation and volunteer for his campaign. Remember "Freedom is Not Free" --and we must fund our own fight!

This Week's Question:

Hi Cathy,

I have self published 2 books with Trafford and spent considerable sums of money marketing, with no financial returns.  Please advise me on the way forward and I'm interested in knowing if you can assist me in any way?  My books are the unapologetic quest for success and sexolution with love activity.

Thank you,

T. Chester

Cathy's Response:

First of all you need to learn everything you can about erotica books and the writing industry.  Erotica books are extremely hot amongst many readers and one of the best-selling books out there.  Make sure you have the right 'target market/audience.'  A target market is a group of customers that the business has decided to aim its marketing efforts.

Remember over 77% of romance books are being purchased on a laptop, and 67% of romance e-books purchased are PDF or ePUB.  While most readers are buying e-books from the popular book retailers, 15% of romance readers are buying these e-books from publisher's websites.

I have a friend that I mentor who is doing quite well with several interracial erotica romance e-books at www.KaseyMoone.com which is extremely hot right now.  Her checks are getting larger each month.  She went through a publisher that caters to erotica romance books.

What you need to understand is that Trafford books are a Print On Demand (POD) company.  Personally I chose to start my own company and become a self-publisher at www.AngelsPress.com instead of dealing with PODs.  Going the POD route is a good way to get your name in print but after a year or two --many people turn to self-publishing which is what I advise you to do.  Even better find a publisher that caters to erotica and "write away."

Some of the problems with POD:

·       Your publisher might stop publishing your book if it is not selling and they will not tell you this upfront.

·         Many authors who have published books through these companies have ended up with books with many typographical errors because they thought the companies would edit their books --so read the fine print.

It's one thing to write a book but while you were writing you should have been learning everything you could about marketing and the business side of a writing or publishing business.  Marketing actually bring in customers and clients to buy your book so you should be marketing at least 75% of your time.

My writing book lists over 30 free and low-cost ways to market your book and my business book can explain to you how business actually work. So you need to go ahead and purchase both of these e-books "How To Write a Book: A Complete Guide to Writing and Selling Your Own Paperback or E-book"  and "How To Take Control of Your Own Life: A Self-Help Guide to Starting Your Own Business."

I have read everything on marketing out there and therefore have been able to write a series of empowerment e-books at
www.AngelsPress.com and receive a steady stream of income from the sale of my content-rich books.  Also the more books you write ---the more money you will make.

Good luck!

Health Tip of the Week
Kids and Genetically Modified Foods

When we think of the risks of genetically engineered food - many of us worry a great deal about it's effects on our children and future generations. Children are more vulnerable to the effects of GMOs. Could the increase in Autism be the result of the genetic manipulation of our food supply? What about the increase in allergies, asthma, attention deficit disorder or the many other chronic conditions effecting children today?

At the Institute for Responsible Technology - we believe that we can get GMOs out of our food supply if we can educate and motivate enough people to avoid them. Would you be willing to help educate your community about the risks of GMOs and inform them about how genetically engineered food could possibly be endangering our children? If so, we now have a Children's Advocate toolkit available for you to help us reach the Tipping Point of consumer rejection of GMOs and getting them out of our children's meals.

This toolkit contains materials such as a brochure specifically for parents, parent action ideas, sample letters to restaurants, grocery stores and many other resources. We have also created specific children oriented powerpoint slides to use when speaking to audiences. We encourage you to visit the page at http://www.responsibletechnology.org/parents-tools and become active by educating your community.

Our children and future generations are depending upon us.
