Summer safety tips for pets
While we love to soak up some sun, we need to be mindful that our furry friends may not appreciate the heat as much as we do. Here are a few things to remember as the temperatures rise:
  • posing dog - summer themeEnsure that your pets have access to fresh water at all times. Keeping your pets well hydrated will help prevent heat stress.
  • Never leave your pets in your car. Even with the windows open, the temperature inside a vehicle can rapidly increase, much higher than the temperature outside. Leaving your pet inside a parked vehicle can be fatal.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities. Pay close attention to your dog's breathing, and discontinue activity if your pet is panting more than usual or having laboured breathing. When outside, make sure that your dog has access to a shaded area to avoid direct sun.
  • Walk your dog early in the morning and in the evening to avoid the scorching heat of summer.
If you find a pet unattended in a hot vehicle, call 310-SPCA (7722) or 911.

Over $13,000 raised during Responsible Pet Ownership Month!
We are pleased to announce that we were able to raise over $13,000 during Responsible Pet Ownership (RPO) Month.
The month of May was filled with various events and activities organized by Animal Services to promote responsible ownership in our community.
Over 140 animals were vaccinated against rabies through our low-cost Rabies and Microchip clinics.

We also raised over $3,500 during the 6th Annual Petapolooza Pet Tradeshow

Held at Grand Valley Park, this year's event had approximately 400 more guests compared to last year's.

This one-day outdoor event included many vendors and rescue groups. Some highlights included a dog show by Woofjocks Canine All-Stars,  and a special appearance by Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue and their adorable Animal Ambassadors!

Special thanks goes out to our RPO partners who helped make the month's events possible: Global Pet Foods, Pickering Town Centre, Pet Valu, TACC Developments, Gates Wildlife Control, OPG, Pickering Honda, and Denise Shea (RE/MAX Rouge River Realty Ltd.).

Ticks and Lyme Disease: What you need to know
Lyme disease is caused by a bacterial infection that can affect humans and animals. The bacteria is transmitted to humans via the bite of an infected tick.
Many species of ticks can be found in Pickering, and that is why it is important to regularly check yourself and your pets, especially when going to wooded areas.

Meet Rex
Rex
Rex came to us as a stray, wandering a golf course. He's a friendly, very active, young adult looking for a family who can keep him busy with lots of activities and exercise. This happy fellow needs a fenced in acreage to run and burn off his energy! He would also benefit from some obedience training and a confident owner who is comfortable around large, active dogs.

Rex is a big sweetheart who is just looking for his forever home. He has been neutered, dewormed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Come meet Rex at the shelter,  located at 1688 Highway 7.  We are sure he will win your heart!
