*** ANIME CORNER UPDATES ***
One day after sending out their January schedule (see below), Funimation sent over an update to let us know that they have changed the price for the first Toriko boxed set.
The original MSRP was $64.98, but the new MSRP is now $39.98. Quite a price drop. We've reduced our pre-order price accordingly to $26.98:
Toriko Collection Part #1 DVD (Eps #1-13)
Since it was so quick I don't think there were any pre-orders that had come in before we changed the price - but if there are we will automatically change your order to the new price. Not sure what happened there, but I guess Funi just had the wrong price on it in the original retailer mailer.
Funi also let us know this week that the Air Movie DVD (S.A.V.E.) is now officially discontinued and now out of print. There will not be another version of this released by them, so get em while they last!
We finally got in the new accessory ears for the Necomimi brainwave ear set, so you can now update your ears set with Black, Brown, and even Leopard style ears! Check em out!
Funimation announced at its New York Comic Con panel that it licensed the anime film Wolf Children Ame and Yuki. They are planning theatrical and home video releases for Wolf Children in 2013. They also announced Toriko, but that's already on the schedule for January.
And finally, BDUBTheAnimeMaster makes a couple of recommendations here endorsing both Elven Lied and Golden Boy and we totally agree with him - two classic titles that everyone should see!

Then he discovers Meme has a secret daughter (and self-proclaimed alien) named Erio. He finds her rolling around by the front door of Meme's house wrapped up in a futon. It is then he realizes that his dream adolescent life will not come true, and begins a life of experiences that are out of this world.

Just a follow to let everyone know that Lisa Smith, the Orlando Anime Club member who was recently reported missing, has surfaced again per new updates to her Facebook page. Not sure what happened to her for the two weeks she was missing, but we're all glad to see that she's OK.
The United States Department of Justice's "Project Safe Childhood" initiative revealed on Monday that Christjan Bee, a 36-year-old man from Monett, Missouri, has pleaded guilty in federal court to obscenity charges for possession of "cartoons" that depicted child pornography. In August 2011, Bee's wife contacted the Monett Police Department to report that she had found child pornography on Bee's computer. Police confiscated Bee's computer and found a collection of electronic comics titled "incest comics" that "contained multiple images of minors engaging in graphic sexual intercourse with adults and other minors." Project Safe Childhood's press release about the plea noted that "the depictions clearly lack any literary, artistic, political or scientific value." The government is recommending a sentence of three years in federal prison without parole for Bee. The sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled, and will be scheduled after the United States Probation Office conducts a pre-sentence investigation. Project Safe Childhood is an initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to "combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse."
We really should wait until someone actually does something legitimately prosecutable before we prosecute them. Drawings are drawings, no matter how offensive they look, they are just art. How old is a character depicted in the drawing? How can you tell? Maybe she just 'looks young' because she's drawn that way. Does it even matter? How exactly is a character in a drawing being exploited? A drawing of an under aged individual, regardless of how offensive, is so far from a photograph of the same that the light from one takes millions of years to reach the other. Every time one of these cases comes up we all end up looking over our shoulder at our manga collections and wondering what might be lurking in there that we shouldn't let the neighbors see. I think when we start locking people up for looking at drawings, we have set the bar for prosecution too low, just like they have in the so called 'war on drugs' that has stuffed the prisons full of people for minor drug violations. When the jails are stuffed full of people for what essentially is a 'thought crime', were do we go from there? ~sigh~
The B-Town Blog, a local news blog for the Burien area of Washington state, reported on Friday that Travis De Nevers, a local resident, contacted the King County Library System (KCLS) after finding that his 10-year-old niece had checked out the second volume of Makoto Tateno's Hero Heel yaoi manga.
You can read all about this at ANN here. Frankly, I do have to agree, while Yaoi is art, June Manga releases should not be in the library accessible to younglings.
Police in Gamagori, Aichi arrested a 14-year-old middle school boy on suspicion of stabbing a teacher with a ballpoint pen during class. The suspect allegedly stabbed a 30-year-old female teacher over 10 times in both of her shoulders around 12:30 p.m. on October 1. The teacher sustained minor injuries that lasted about a week. The teacher had warned the suspect about reading manga in class and had then confiscated the manga when the suspect continued reading. According to reports, the student said "Give it back!" and in a fury, stabbed her with a pen from her desk. The teacher filed a report on October 2 and has yet to return to teaching the class.
They take manga VERY seriously in Japan.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 1: Beginnings earned 50,769,700 yen (about US$642,815) its second weekend at the Japanese box office, bringing its total to 311,366,865 yen (US$3,942,340). The film sank to the #11 spot on the October 13-14 chart after opening at #7. Box Office Mojo does not currently list the second Madoka Magica film, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 2: Eternal. Kadokawa Shoten's MovieWalker website reported that the second film opened this past weekend at #2 with 171,622,400 yen (about US$2,180,170). The Mystical Laws stayed in the top 10, earning 85,659,913 (US$1,084,574) yen in its second week for a total of 364,593,620 (US$4,616,266) yen earned to date.
The movies is doing so well Writer Gen Urobuchi says they are kicking the idea around of a new TV season after the 3rd film and maybe more movies after that!
Frank Miller is being sued by a former employee, though it is the actions of Miller's girl friend Kimberly Cox that are the subject of the suit brought by Joanna Gallardo-Mills, who joined Miller's staff as an "executive coordinator" in 2008. Gallardo's complaint alleges that she was fired for complaining about the way that Cox treated her. According to Gallardo-Mills, who has been in the U.S. for over 20 years, Cox was constantly criticizing her accented English. The disputes with Cox reached escalated in July of 2010 when Cox allegedly threw a phone and a chair at Gallardo-Mills and then smeared feces on a countertop in the employee's workspace. A year later Gallardo-Mills contends that Cox destroyed a printer with a hammer and flung files around the room before decorating the workplace with a used menstrual pad. After that flareup, Miller agreed to allow Gallardo-Mills to work from home to avoid confrontations with Cox.
Yikes! Talk about catty! rrrrrrrrrrr!
And finally, Detroit's Midtown district maid cafe, Chou Anime Cafe, closed its doors last month. The company opened in June, and, according to the company's website, the last day of operation was September 22. The post cites lack of steady customers inevitably led to café closing. The restaurant featured girls (and one male) greeting guests as "Master" or "my Princess." The café served Great Lakes coffees, salads, sandwiches, wraps, sushi and imported Japanese sweets. For an added fee, the maids played board, card, and video games with customers.
This 'might' have had a chance in a place like San Diego, but I'm thinking Detroit was probably not a good location for this. While great in theory, there is a reason why we don't run a retail Anime Store in Winchester, Virginia and Brand X doesn't run one in Grimes, Iowa - lest we all stand around all day waiting for one of maybe six potential local customers to drop in... -_^
Well, that's it for this week. Have a great weekend everyone, and enjoy your Anime!
