ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE NOTAH BEGAY III FOUNDATION

NB3 Foundation, Nike N7 Fund Partner to Increase Physical Activity Among Native American Youth

The Notah Begay III (NB3) Foundation is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Nike N7 Fund on an impactful initiative – Native Youth on the Move – designed to increase the number of Native American youth (ages 7-18) in participating in play, physical activity and sports in the greater Albuquerque area.

This unique place-based initiative is a first for the NB3 Foundation and N7 Fund. With a three-year grant from the Nike N7 Fund, the NB3 Foundation will serve as the primiary organization for the Native Youth on the Move project by bringing together Native and non-Native organizations and Albuquerque-area community leaders to address factors contributing to lack of participation in sports and other activities among Native youth.

Over the next three years the NB3 Foundation will:
  • Conduct a baseline assessment of existing opportunities, gaps and barriers to Native youth engaged in physical activity and sports.
  • Organize and convene a network of partners to develop solutions and decrease barriers.
  • Develop and promote accessible physical activity opportunities for Native youth through a partnership network.
  • Host Physical Activity Summits in 2018 and 2019 to engage and inspire Native youth health champions and practitioners in the greater Albuquerque area.

Regular physical activity among Native youth contributes to lifelong physical health, such as building strong bones and muscles, maintaining a healthy weight and overall wellbeing and mental health. Being physically active also reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes and helps positively address several other issues that Native youth face, incluiding low graduation rates to high rates of substance abuse and suicide.

The Native Youth on the Move project compliments the NB3FIT ’s existing golf, soccer and cross country programming in the Albuquerque area. The NB3 Foundation is excited for this opportunity, and looks forward to continuing partnerships and collaborations to support Native American children’s health.
