Doctoral Student Uncovers Birth of Inequality on Cyprus

Eilis Monahan, center, is combining archaeology with interests in anthropology, computer science and other areas.
As a Fulbright and National Science Foundation-funded scholar, Eilis Monahan will spend nine months on the island of Cyprus surveying its fortresses and villages to learn how a relatively egalitarian village society during the early to Middle Bronze Age (ca. 2500-1650 B.C.), rapidly changed to one of extreme social inequality and political complexity in the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1650-1050 B.C.). The key, she believes, may be in the construction of fortifications, the physical embodiment of large-scale violence.

"I'm interested in the way the built environment controls the way we can move and affects our social interactions," said Monahan, who received her undergraduate degree in classical and Near Eastern archaeology from Bryn Mawr College. "The material world actually creates social inequality by making our differences concrete. Objects, buildings, these things that surround our lives, provide opportunities and limitations on our actions. Because these things are real and in the world outside our own existence, their effects can be long-lived and unpredictable."

Graduate Students Share $10,000 Food Science Prize with Development of "Yojito"

From left, Linran Wang, Jiyu Zhu, Belen Vila and Michelle Duong
A team of Cornell food science students have developed a new beverage, combining the smooth texture of drinkable yogurt with mint-flavored pearls that pop in the mouth. Their creation, "Yojito," has won the grand prize at a prestigious product development competition.

Doctoral student Michelle Duong, graduate student Belen Vila, Jiyu Zhu, MPS '16, and Linran Wang '16, who will start her master's degree program this fall, took home top honors and a $10,000 prize at the Idaho Milk Processors Association Conference Aug. 14 in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Yojito is a lime-flavored drinkable yogurt with mint popping boba. Most often associated with tapioca pearls found in bubble tea, popping boba are small, edible spheres made from fruit juice concentrate or flavor extracts. Inspired by the mojito, the product is a dairy drink packed with protein and other nutrients that combines refreshing flavors of mint and lime.

Alum Lindsay Wyatt Helps Lead Student Organic Seed Symposium

Assistant professor Michael Mazourek works with graduate student Lindsay Wyatt  (2013)
From their base at Colby College, a group of 50 students and global leaders in organic plant breeding systems attended an intensive, four-day series of lectures, panel discussions, and field trips crisscrossing rural Central and Down East Maine.

"SOSS, the Student Organic Seed Symposium, is a conference of graduate students in organic plant breeding, their professors, and industry people. And, it is remarkably put together each year by the students themselves. The conferees, especially the students, are a vital part of building a healthier food system" s aid Johnny's Chairman and Founder, Rob Johnston, Jr.

Lindsay Wyatt, a plant breeder at Johnny's specializing in squash and pumpkins, is a prime case in point. Wyatt, who first helped host the 2014 conference as a Cornell grad student, participated in the planning as a professional this year. "Most agricultural schools today have a strong Big-Ag focus, and while studying for my PhD, I was struggling in my plans. Involvement in the symposium validated and reinvigorated my interest in applied, hands-on breeding of vegetable crops. That was an important turning point in my life that led to my work here at Johnny's."
