Colman Leadership Program Empowered Doctoral Students for Leadership, Transformation

Over four days in the ILR Conference Center, the participants reflected on their individual personalities and values, read writings from different disciplinary perspectives, and explored diversity in various contexts, conflict resolution, and interpersonal and group dynamics. They worked in small groups on assignments including collaborative presentations.

Held in June and January, the Colman program is hosted by Diversity Programs in Engineering (DPE) and the Graduate School's Office of Inclusion and Student Engagement. The Colman Family Endowed Fund for Leadership, established in 2012 within DPE, initially supported a January program for doctoral students in engineering and related STEM fields. The June offering, now in its second year, is open to Ph.D. students in all fields.

Postdocs and Graduate Students Contribute to Important Study about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Cornell researchers report they have identified biological markers of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) in gut bacteria and inflammatory microbial agents in the blood. In a study published June 23 in the journal Microbiome, the team describes how they correctly diagnosed CFS in 83 percent of patients through stool samples and blood work, offering a noninvasive diagnosis and a step toward understanding the cause of the disease. Postdoc Ludovic Giloteaux was lead author on the study. Co-authors include Julia Goodrich, a doctoral student, William Walters, a postdoctoral researcher, Ruth Ley, assistant professor of molecular biology, and senior author Maureen Hanson, professor of molecular biology.

Student-designed "Crystallize" Makes Language-Learning Video Games More Social

Players learn language through social interactions
Ph.D. student Gabriel Culbertson, working with Erik Andersen, assistant professor of computer science, Malte Jung, assistant professor of information science, Walker White, director of the Game Design Initiative at Cornell, and undergraduate researcher Daniel Zhang '15, have developed "Crystallize," a role-playing video game that teaches foreign language through quests and social interaction. Researchers found that when players are required to work together they learn more words - and enjoy the game more. There are many language learning programs available, they noted, but most focus on memorizing vocabulary, using devices such as flashcards. Immersion in a virtual world, they suggest, provides visual and situational context, while gaming elements add motivation.

Transitions Support Group for Late-Stage/Graduating Students - Still Time to Attend

Are you anxious about your upcoming move following graduation? Going in absentia or taking a leave of absence and figuring out how to finish your dissertation away from Ithaca? Unsure how to cultivate a new support system?

The Graduate and Professional Student Mental Health Committee is offering a 4-week (with possibility of extension) student support group during the month of June focused on helping graduate and professional students navigate moments of transition. This confidential space will offer students the opportunity to talk with peers dealing with similar challenges surrounding transitions, including moving away from Ithaca, but also other major life changes. The group will be facilitated by EARS-trained counselors and feature guest visits from Gannett and student services staff, who will offer guidance on coping strategies and help students come up with a plan of action for the forthcoming year.

Meetings will be on Wednesdays from 12:00 - 1:00 PM in Willard Straight Hall, room 411. Our next meeting is Wednesday June 29. Please RSVP here, so we know numbers for food--lunch will be provided. You can also email Mia Tootill ( mst88@cornell.edu) if you have any questions or concerns.
Office Hours with Assistant Dean Janna Lamey

During the Summer Session, Assistant Dean of Student Life Janna Lamey is available to meet with students.  Please feel free to contact her directly to set up a meeting ( janna.lamey@cornell.edu).  Students often meet with Janna to chat about additional academic support, receive assistance in navigating your educational program, provide referrals to campus services and support your personal development.  She can also be just an ear to listen when you feel stressed!

Around Campus:
Gannett's New Entrance!

Temporary Entrance to Gannett
Beginning today, Monday, June 27, all Gannett services will be provided in our newly built addition, behind the original Gannett building on Ho Plaza. Our main entrance for the next year will be on Campus Road, just down the hill from Ho Plaza.

Our original building will be renovated throughout the next year. In Fall 2017, the updated and expanded facility will open in its entirety under the new name "Cornell Health." (Gannett will officially change our name to Cornell Health in Spring 2017).

Throughout our renovation project, we will continue to provide the same services, number of appointments, and level of care to which our patients and clients are accustomed. However, we recognize that the changes to our facility and the temporary locations of some of our services may be inconvenient or challenging for some.

We encourage all visitors to share their feedback with us about how we can improve our services, or contact a patient advocate with questions or concerns. For more information, please visit gannett.cornell.edu/building.
