News:
Update on Student Health Insurance

In conversations at Friday's Board of Trustees meeting, Senior Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School Barbara Knuth affirmed the recent guidance from the Departments of Labor, Treasury, and Health and Human Services that enables Cornell to continue offering our platinum level health plan, the Student Health Plan (SHP), to graduate and professional students. In addition, Cornell has enhanced the benefit for students traveling outside the Ithaca area.

Starting in 2017-2018, Cornell SHP will reduce the cost for care received outside the Ithaca area for graduate and professional students who see Aetna participating providers. The cost will be reduced from 20% to 10%.  This enhancement is a direct response to concerns about how to improve access to care for students who are studying or performing research away from campus.

The platinum level Student Health Plan was designed with substantial input from undergraduate and graduate students who serve on the Student Health Benefits Advisory Committee and offers the highest level of coverage available through the Affordable Care Act, which continues to be federal law after an alternative health care bill was removed on Friday from further consideration by the U.S. House of Representatives.

Highlights of Cornell's SHP:
  • Provides coverage 24 hours a day, anywhere in the world
  • Covers pre-existing health conditions
  • Meets or exceeds all F-1 and J-1 visa requirements
  • Includes world-wide travel assistance and emergency air transportation services
  • Guards against catastrophic expenses
  • Offers optional dental and vision plans
  • Continues coverage when students take a leave of absence
  • Exceeds the requirements of the U.S. Affordable Care Act
  • Meets or exceeds all Federal, State, and American College Health Association standards for health insurance [view SHP vs NY Exchange price and coverage comparison (pdf)]
  • For students in Ithaca, provides coordination of services by Cornell Health and a preferred provider network that includes the local hospital
  • Provides convenient assistance with enrollment and claims submission through the Office of Student Health Benefits
Students who are interested in providing future input are encouraged to contact the Student Health Benefits Advisory Committee (SHBAC), which is charged with reviewing and advising on the Student Health Plan and Student Health Fee, and facilitating communication between the University and students served by Cornell's health plan and health fee.  The SHBAC conducts an annual review of the Plan and evaluates the options, coverage, and costs.
Graduate School Endorses Council of Graduate Schools Statement on the Proposed Elimination of the NEH and NEA

Last week, the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) issued a statement regarding the proposed elimination of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).  antique_bookstore.jpg

Cornell's Graduate School is a member of the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), and Senior Vice Provost and Dean Barbara Knuth is a past chair of the board of directors of CGS.

The Graduate School endorses this statement and appreciates the work CGS is doing on behalf of graduate students and graduate faculty in the arts and humanities.

PhD candidate in Musicology, Sergio Ospina-Romero, just published his first book: Dolor que canta. La vida y la música de Luis A. Calvo en la sociedad colombiana de comienzos del siglo XX

Published by the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History, Dolor que canta is a biography of Colombian composer Luis Antonio Calvo (1882-1945). The book goes beyond the chronicle of his personal circumstances and analysis of his musical artwork, it uses his life as a window to appreciate broader issues in the social and cultural history of Colombia during the first half of the twentieth century.

Next Thursday, March 30th, at 4:30pm in 124 Lincoln Hall, Sergio will present his book during the Musicology Colloquium. Live music! Everyone is welcome!

Ask a Dean - Questions and Responses

Due to timing of the union representation election, we will not be posting union-related questions in this week's Announcements. View the complete Ask a Dean archive with most recent questions on top.

Question: Do you have any idea how to effectively reach employees for a research study?

Hello,

I'm a doctoral candidate in life sciences and I'm working on a weight gain prevention study for Cornell employees. People gain about 1 lb per year and we are trying to see if daily self weighing can prevent this unwanted weight gain. We are looking for Cornell employees who will be in the area for the next 2 years. They would receive $20 for the first height and weight measurement and be randomly assigned to the treatment group (we give them a scale to weigh themselves daily) or the control group, which does nothing. At the end of 2 years they would receive $50 for the height and weight measurement.

We are having trouble recruiting participants. Any Cornell employee may be eligible (building care, administrative staff, deans, etc.) Do you have any ideas of how to effectively reach employees?

Best,
Weight-researching Graduate Student

Question: Is it normal and/or allowed to have cameras in my lab?

Hi, Deans,

I am wondering what level of surveillance Cornell currently has and what the "upper limit" is for office and lab spaces. There is a research group in the engineering school that is installing cameras in the lab space, and the students who use that lab will be required to sign a consent form in order to maintain access. As a graduate student who needs lab access to make progress towards a Masters or PhD, the choice of being constantly monitored while you work or not being able to complete your degree seems extreme. Is this normal? And more importantly, is this allowed?

Thank you,

Camera-concerned Graduate Student
