6 Ph.D. Students Learn to Commercialize Their Research
 
Six doctoral students will spend the summer and the fall semester exploring the potential to turn that research into a business. The fellows will learn the methods and skills to bring technology to market, connecting with expertise in supply chains, intellectual property, product development, capital raising and startup company formation. The students and technologies are:

Vikram Gadagkar MS '10, PhD '13, recieves Simons Fellowship

Vikram Gadagkar MS '10, PhD '13 was recently awarded a prestigious three-year, $234,150  Simons Foundation fellowship with the Simons Collaboration on the Global Brain (SCGB). SCGB seeks to expand understanding of the role of internal brain processes in the arc from sensation to action, thereby discovering the nature, role and mechanisms of the neural activity that produces cognition.
 
 
Theatre Arts Student Jayme Kilburn's play "Garbage Kids" Praised in Baltimore Sun

Cornell graduate student Jayme Kilburn's play "Garbage Kids" is playing at Baltimore's Venus Theatre this week. This play invites patrons to a wild walk on the homeless side through the eyes of abandoned kids.

Kilburn is pursuing a doctorate in theatre arts from Cornell University, and she graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara with a degree in dramatic art and psychology and earned a master's degree in humanities and social thought from Cornell.
 
 
Graduate Students Participate in Cross-Disciplinary Trip to Study Urbanization and the Amazon

The field trip, part of the spring seminar Forest Cartographies, focused on issues of community, housing, resettlement, deforestation, political ecology, anthropology and archaeology. Forest Cartographies is the fifth in a series of Mellon Seminars in Architecture, Urbanism and the Humanities, fostering intellectual exchange between arts, humanities, social sciences and design disciplines.

Office of Inclusion & Student Engagement (OISE) Hiring Program Assistant
 
The OISE Program Assistant supports the OISE Program Coordinator in the coordination of programs for OISE and other members of the Graduate School Dean's staff. The schedule for this position is flexible, but it will require some hours in the evenings and weekends depending upon program needs. Part time position will be 6 -8 hours per week. Apply online.

Fellowships, Postdocs, & Awards:
George J. Mitchell Scholarship

The George J. Mitchell Scholarship supports one year of graduate study in any field at one of the eight institutions of higher learning in the Republic of Ireland. Applicants must be U.S. citizens under the age of 30 with a record of intellectual distinction, leadership, extracurricular activity, and service to others. Cornell endorsement is required. Schwarzman Scholarship

The Schwarzman Scholarship provides one year of master's degree study at Tsinghua University in Beijing in one of three fields: public policy, international studies, or economics and business. Instruction will be in English. Applicants must have an excellent academic record and demonstrate leadership. Citizens of all countries are eligible. Candidates must be under 29 years of age. English proficiency test scores must be submitted if English is not the applicant's native language. Application Deadline: September 15, 2016.

The Luce Scholarship

The Luce Scholarship program provides a stipend and an individually arranged job for one year to increase awareness of Asia among future leaders in American society. Applicants must be U.S. citizens under 30 years of age and have demonstrated leadership in a chosen field. Applicants may NOT have a professed career interest in Asian affairs or have had significant exposure to Asia. Otherwise all fields are welcome, including fine arts, environmental studies, public policy, engineering, architecture, veterinary medicine, agriculture, law, non-profit management, international relations, et al.

Registration Open for the Expanding Your Job Search Skills Workshop

If you are a doctoral student interested in a career outside of academia, attend this intensive workshop to learn about interviewing skills, the art of career networking, resources for your job search, how to develop a resume from your CV, and more. Two alumni presenters will be featured during the workshop:
  • Dr. Steve Allison-Bunnell, Science & Technology Studies PhD, whose career specialties include online learning, science communication, and user experience
  • Dr. Sarah Pradt, East Asian Literatures PhD, whose career specialties include higher education teaching and non-profits

Ithaca Festival of the Arts Starts This Week  

Ithaca Festival of the Arts Starts on Friday, June 3 (and last through June 5)
 
The Ithaca Festival is a weekend music and arts celebration, the premier event of its kind in Tompkins County. Over 1,000 talented local musicians, painters, dancers, clowns, community groups, and ensembles perform throughout the Ithaca Festival weekend. Enjoy multiple stages of entertainment, some special kid's activities, a craft show, a parade, a local film festival, an arts for social justice area, and delicious festival food at various locations.

International Travel Reminders

Cornell students and staff who travel internationally on Cornell-related programs or university business are required to register their travel in Cornell's Travel Registry, as noted in university policy 8.5 Risk Management for International Travel. This requirement applies to degree-seeking undergraduate, graduate and professional school students as well as Cornell staff.

On a related note, all Cornell faculty, students, and staff are covered by UHC Global Assistance (formerly FrontierMEDEX) when traveling abroad on university business. UHC Global Assistance provides emergency evacuation assistance, medical referrals worldwide and can provide travel assistance in emergency situations. Summer 2016 Films Screening on Willard Straight Terrace

 This summer Cornell Cinema will present four classic films outdoors on the Willard Straight Terrace, all with a cash bar, complimentary snacks and a great view! Patrons are also welcome to bring picnic dinners. Doors will open at 8:15pm and films will start at 9:30pm, after dark. In the event of rain, screenings will be held in Willard Straight Theatre. Tickets are $13 general/$11 students & seniors and can be purchased in advance online at CornellCinemaTickets.com (starting June 1st). These tickets will be held at the "will call" table for pickup the night of the show. Any tickets unclaimed by 9:15pm may be resold. Credit cards cannot be used at the door.  Terrace shows typically sell-out in advance, so patrons are encouraged to plan accordingly! Data Carpentry Workshop

Cornell Astronomical Society Hosts Stargazing

Starting on Friday, May 27 from 8:00 pm - 12:00 am - The Cornell Astronomical Society hosts stargazing at the historic Fuertes Observatory on Cornell's North Campus every clear Friday evening starting at dusk. Free and open to the public; parking across the street. Call 607-255-3557 after 6 p.m. to see if we are open that night.
