Commercialization Fellows Learn to Make Ideas Sell

A panel of doctoral students reminisced about their experiences as the first class of Commercialization Fellows April 28 at Entrepreneurship at Cornell's Celebration conference.

Offered by the College of Engineering, the funded six-month fellowship for engineering Ph.D. students bridges technological innovation in engineering with the commercialization process, teaching engineers how to explore the potential industrial applications of university inventions. Introducing students to commercial operations and industry leaders, the fellows work one-on-one with mentors and coaches to identify potential market opportunities for their technologies by developing comprehensive, strategic business plans, and to use these skills repeatedly over the course of their careers.

Doctoral student Fujun Luan is an author on a paper detailing the new Deep Photo Style Transfer. The paper explains how the researchers have augmented style transfer, transposing the look of one photo onto another using neural networks to make sure the details of the original image are preserved. The researchers will present their paper at the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition in July.

In a paper published May 3 in the  Journal of Experimental Biology , doctoral student Michael L. Smith is part of a Cornell-led research group that reports on how workers detect that their colony has reached a threshold to invest in a special type of reproductive comb.

Ask a Dean

Question:

Dear Deans,

Good afternoon!

I'm curious about the recent NLRB ruling. As I understand it, Cornell graduate students with assistantships are now considered employees. Does this provide us with the benefits available to faculty and staff at Cornell, including parking permits, free TCAT bus passes, other commuter benefits, Cornell Wellness Program, etc.?

Thank you so much!

Best,
Graduate Student

Email us your question, and a dean will answer within three business days. Some responses will be made anonymous and published.

D. E. Shaw Exploration Fellowship 2017

This unique educational opportunity taking place at the New York City headquarters from July 19 to 20.

As you may know, the D. E. Shaw group is a global investment and technology development firm with more than $41 billion in investment capital. Given that women are underrepresented in the global alternative investment industry, we have specifically designed a program in an effort to bring together talented and intellectually curious women enrolled in Ph.D. programs. They will receive an introduction to our firm, insights into our rigorous approach to finance, and several professional and social networking opportunities. By engaging with a cross section of people at the firm, from recent Ph.D. graduates to senior leaders, fellows will learn about the challenging problems on which we work, as well as the transition from academia to finance. They'll also receive a $2,000 stipend, accommodations, and travel to and from New York City.

If you have some students who may be interested in and available for this opportunity, there are two ways you can help. You can 1) nominate students via the website and 2) spread the word to eligible students, organizations, and departments and encourage them to apply. We are accepting applications until May 19, 2017.

Navigating Your Future: Creating and Owning You Individual Development Plan

May 24, 2017 | 423 ILR King-Shaw Conference Center

RSVP: https://cornell.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_9tVNozP11eo2w1T

Navigating Your Future is a lunch seminar series focused on professional and academic topics for graduate and postdoctoral scholars. Join us for the May 24th Navigating Your Future Lunch to learn how to conceptualize, draft, and act on your own Individual Development Plan (IDP).

Please note that the workshop will require some preparatory work before the 24th, and some wrap-up work afterwards.

Why IDPs? As a graduate student or post-doc, it can be daunting to think about how you'll achieve your professional goals over the next 1 to 3 years, let alone figuring out what those goals are. Individual development plans are designed to help you do just that: state your goals, assess what you need to do to reach them, and brainstorm on how you might achieve them.

What will the workshop cover? In this workshop, you will create a first draft IDP and an action plan to facilitate conversations with your advisor or supervisor about career goals, current and desired skills, and development opportunities. We will discuss how to define achievable goals, identify resources, and develop strategies for implementing and sustaining your plans. You'll begin by considering your current skills and career aspirations. Then, along with your peers, you will consider key features of effective plans. Workshop participants will also discuss ways to have the most productive mentee-mentor conversations about their IDP.
