Insurance plans are categorized into four "metal" categories, with platinum ranked the highest. In a platinum plan, insurance pays the largest portion of your medical bill, and you pay the least.
Cornell University's
Student Health Plan (SHP) is a
platinum-level
plan that covers Cornell students (and their enrolled
dependents
) on Ithaca's campus, and anywhere else students' might live, study, or travel.
Why is it important to know what category of plan I have?
It's important to review medical plans carefully to ensure that you are comfortable with the coverage and co-payments. Understanding that an urgent care visit will cost more than an office visit can help you decide where to go for routine care. Similarly, understanding how plans are categorized can help you understand your costs and their relationship to your care. SHP's platinum level plan means that Cornell is paying a higher premium to ensure that you have lower costs. In other words, the plan pays more so you can pay less.
How does Cornell's platinum plan translate into costs and savings for me?
Plans in the gold, silver and bronze category typically charge an annual deductible; copayments are charged after the deductible is reached. For example on a sample gold plan, an office visit costs $25 after the deductible is paid. A Gannett office visit on Cornell's platinum plan costs only $10 with no deductible.

Question 1
Dear Deans of the Graduate School,
Hello! I am writing with some questions about the "At What Cost" list-serv from which I have received several emails in the past few months. I am happy that there is balanced discussion about the issues around unionization, but I was surprised to see that my email address had been subscribed to this interest group list-serv when I have expressed no interest in participating in this student group at any time. In the past I have been added onto some official and relevant Cornell list-servs without my consent (for example, those from the department, the Graduate School, and my building) but I think that the At What Cost group is student-run and not run by Cornell. I was told by the IT office to direct my concerns to the Graduate School. Can I get more information to understand the details about the population of the list-serv?
Best,
Curious Graduate Student
Question 2
Dear Dean,
I tried your
blueberry pie recipe. Can you recommend another? This time, with sugar!
Sincerely,
Pie-loving Doctoral Student

Patient Advocates are Gannett Health Services staff members who work with the Cornell community to address questions, needs, concerns, or problems that were not or could not be addressed with the Gannett staff who were directly involved in the patient's visit. Patient Advocates may be helpful when:
- a concern did not become evident until after the visit
- a person has a concern, but does not know with whom to talk
- a person needs a "third party" to hear or to help them communicate a concern
- a person wants to ask a question, make a suggestion, register a complaint, offer feedback
- a Gannett staff member identifies a situation in which a Patient Advocate might be able to answer a question, address a concern, or facilitate a conversation that would be helpful to a patient
- a staff or faculty member, coach, friend, parent or other family member wants to help facilitate care for a student, ask a question, make a suggestion, register a complaint, or offer feedback about our services
Contact a Patient Advocate To make a face-to-face or phone appointment with a Gannett Patient Advocate to discuss any questions, concerns, or comments about your health care, you may:
- call 607 255-3564
- visit the Level 7 reception desk in the new Gannett addition
