Ask a Dean - Questions and Answers

Question 1

I'm a 2nd year PhD student. I've found a major advisor and 2 minor advisors, but I still need a second statistics advisor. I remember I read from somewhere that the deadline to choose committee member is the end of the semester, right? I chose a potential second advisor but only with 70% probability that I will follow him all the way. May select his name on student center temporarily and maybe change later? If so, what is the deadline for change of committee member?

Thank you,

2 nd year PhD Student,

Question 2

I read the recent Letter to the Editor in the Cornell Daily Sun that referred to conversations that occurred in the Union-Management Committee.  I didn't realize that the content of the Union-Management Committee discussions were public.

Given Union members are sharing information from the Union-Management Committee discussions, where can I find meeting minutes or other reports from these meetings?  What topics does the Union-Management Committee discuss?

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question and the questions of other students. It has been quite useful.

Sincerely,
Information-seeking Grad

Question 3

I've searched the CGSU website, but I could not find any information regarding the timeline for a potential graduate student unionization vote. Assuming the vote happens next semester (in the spring) would CGSU try to subpoena our home addresses and phone numbers once again?

I and some of my colleagues are getting annoyed by persistent visits by union members and would not like them to start contacting us outside of campus. Last time, the opt-out information was buried at the bottom of an email from the University, and I personally did not notice it.

Luckily the graduate student group called " At What Cost " sent me an email to highlight the fact that graduate students had the ability to opt-out of the subpoena. Should we, meaning graduate students, keep our eyes open for another opt-out email from the University or At What Cost ?

T hank you for your time,
Curious Graduate Student

Question 4

Could you please tell me some funding or fellowship resources within and outside Cornell, which can support my tuition fees and living expenses? I may really need help with that in my graduate school second year.

Thank you so much,
1 st Year Masters Student

Congratulations! Receiving a job offer can be one of the most exciting things to happen to a student who is about to graduate!  Whether or not finances are a primary motivator to apply for a particular job, it is prudent to evaluate the job offer before rushing to "Yes!" From the salary package to the prospect of job satisfaction, you will need to consider many factors in deciding whether to accept an offer. This session will also cover how (and whether) to negotiate with potential employers.  Presenter: Rebecca Sparrow, Cornell Career Services

Spring Course:

ALS 5100: Leadership Development Course

Fridays, 9:05-12:05, Horton Lab  January 27 - March 24

2 credits

Leadership is a critical factor in organizational and career success.  It involves working effectively with other people to achieve organizational goals and shape social reality.  Every student, no matter what field of endeavor, will face a variety of difficult leadership challenges in life as they are asked to manage people. Even a small lab group will present challenges that will require skill to address well. How these challenges are met can have a significant impact on an organization and on one's career.

This course is designed to introduce graduate students to the concepts and skills of leadership in today's challenging and ever-changing environment. Personal insights and skills will be developed through course activities and assignments, participation in leadership activities in small groups, and through reflection on one's own leadership experiences.  Students will be challenged to assess and develop their emotional intelligence and personal leadership skills in planning, decision-making and problem solving, working in groups, coaching, team building, managing conflict, and facilitating change.
