Warren Wilson leads Ovum's Energy team, focusing primarily on IT for upstream Oil & Gas (exploration & production). He has experience in both IT and oilfield operations, making him uniquely qualified to bridge the gap between these two very different industries.
The focus of Warren's research is this gap between the IT industry's lightning-fast evolution and the inherently slower pace of IT adoption in E&P. This often leads to significant differences between standard oilfield practices and the optimal practices (and business results) achievable through better use of IT.
He has been an IT analyst for 15 years, first with Summit Strategies and then with Ovum when Ovum purchased Summit in 2006. At Summit, his primary focus was on mobile technologies and business applications. On joining Ovum, his research responsibilities shifted to enterprise applications such as ERP, CRM, supply chain management, and analytics. For a time he specialized in the role of enterprise applications in enabling sustainable business practices. He launched Ovum's upstream Oil & Gas technology practice in 2012.
Before becoming an IT analyst, Warren was a reporter and editor for U.S. newspapers including the Casper (Wyoming) Star-Tribune, where he covered oil & gas and other energy industries; The Miami Herald; and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He majored in geology at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., and later worked in the oilfield as a roughneck and well logger. He still has all his fingers and toes.
