Having been raised in the Miami area, he is fluent in Spanish and English. Herbert graduated from Coral Gables Senior High School and holds a Master of Arts in Architecture degree, with a specialty in Architectural Preservation, from the University of Florida.
After his graduate studies, Herbert went to work as an Architectural Historian for the National Register of Historic Places and was then appointed Historic Preservation Planner for the city of Savannah, Georgia. While in Savannah, Herbert founded the Historic Preservation program at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).

At present, Herbert is restoring his new home, a landmark house built by Coral Gables founder George Merrick, which includes a complete kitchen renovation that will be showcased in the Foundation's upcoming 5th annual Tour of Kitchens (January 25, 2014). The Foundation is pleased and honored to announce Herbert Brito as the Chair of our 2014 Tour of Kitchens Committee.

MERRICK SOCIETY
Geroge Merrick's wife was Eunice Isabella Peacock, daughter of Coconut Grove pioneers R.A.S. Peacock and Lilian Irene Frow. She owned most of lower Upper Matecumbe Keys, so they moved there after the hurricane of 1926 and George, ever the dreamer, built the "Caribbee Colony" as a second project [after Coral Gables] not far from the famous Long Key Fishing Camp on nearby Long Key.1
Nearby, an exclusive club known as "1) Islamorada Fishing Club, 2) Matecumbe Fishing Club and 3) The Millionaires Club . . . was built in the 1920s . . . by 11 members of the New York Cotton Exchange and its membership limited to 11."2
Both clubs were destroyed in the famous 'Storm of the Century' in 1935, but they represent a relaxing and beautiful style of vacation living many South Floridians still enjoy or aspire to today.

ABOUT THE MERRICK SOCIETY
Merrick's vision for better living lives on today as involved Coral Gables residents strive to maintain the look and feel of the City Beautiful. Do you have a vision for Coral Gables? The Coral Gables Community Foundation established the Merrick Society so that visionary people like you could continue George Merrick's dream or color your own. The Merrick Society preserves key philanthropic activities in the Gables and raises unrestricted funds for the Foundation. Merrick Society donors commit to a 3-year annual contribution of $1,000, $2,500, $5,000, $10,000, or more. Merrick Society level donors are invited to the annual benefactor reception and other special functions, and receive a lapel pin in recognition of their participation and vision.
