Announcing New Speakers:

Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR)  serves on the Senate Committees on Foreign Relations; Appropriations; Budget; and Environment and Public Works. He will participate with a Republican Senator in a conversation on U.S. foreign policy, to be moderated by Nancy Lindborg, President of the United States Institute of Peace. 

Senator Merkley has long-held ties to the WACA network as former president of the World Affairs Council of Oregon. He has served in the U.S. Senate since 2009.

Thomas Wright  is Director of the Center on the United States and Europe and a senior fellow in the Project on International Order and Strategy at the Brookings Institution

Wright's research includes U.S. foreign policy and grand strategy, Donald Trump's worldview, the future of Europe, and Asian security. His book, All Measures Short of War: The Contest for the 21st Century and the Future of American Power, (2017) was featured on WACA's  Cover to Cover author series in May.  Listen to the podcast .

Steven A. Cook is Eni Enrico Mattei Senior Fellow for Middle East and Africa Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). He is an expert on Arab and Turkish politics as well as U.S.-Middle East policy.  Cook is the author of  False Dawn: Protest, Democracy, and Violence in the New Middle East  (2017) and won the Washington Institute for Near East Policy's gold medal for his 2012 publication, The Struggle for Egypt: From Nasser to Tahrir Square.
