Regulatory Reform:
Ohio Can Make It Happen This Year
For the past several years Ohio Senator Rob Portman has led the push for bi-partisan federal regulatory reform. Earlier this year, Sen. Portman introduced S. 951, legislation called the Regulatory Accountability Act (RAA). Unlike previous Congresses, the 115th Congress has a real chance to make this important regulatory reform a reality.
In part, the RAA is aimed at codifying executive orders that most agencies are already required to follow and helping Congress reclaim legislative powers delegated to agencies over the past few decades. It’s about agencies being more transparent by involving the public early on and using the best data to ensure they produce sound quality regulations.

First in a Series: Growth and Opportunity for North America
Twenty-five years ago this week, negotiations for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) were concluded. And today in Washington, officials will launch negotiations to modernize the agreement for a new era of North American commerce. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should update the NAFTA: After all, the world has changed substantially in the past quarter century.
As the leading voice of the U.S. business community, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has been at the center of this year’s debate over the NAFTA for a simple reason: Some 14 million U.S. jobs depend on trade with Canada and Mexico, and well over $1 trillion in trade crosses our borders annually.

Great Books About Business With Just A Click
Your link to success begins at the library. Each week in "In The Know,"
you to a business book or magazine that will inspire, teach, inform, or elevate you, professionally and personally. This week's book is:
The Optimistic Workplace
by Shawn Murphy
When it comes to work these days, we're expected to do more with less. But is this nose-to-the-grindstone philosophy the best way to run a business? Alarmingly low employee engagement numbers indicate otherwise. So, if pushing everyone harder isn't the path to productivity, what is? Supported by the latest research,
The Optimistic Workplace: Creating An Environment That Energizes Everyone
argues that our best work is the product of a positive environment.

Today in History
- August 18, 1868 -
While watching a total solar eclipse from Guntoor, India, French astronomer Pierre Janssen discovered helium in a spectrum of the sun by using a special prism instrument known as a spectroscope.
As
Wired
notes
,
"The event marks the first discovery of an 'extraterrestrial' element, as helium had not yet been found on Earth."
On October 18, 1868, English astronomer Joseph Norman Lockyer also discovered helium in the sun's prominences. Janssen and Lockyer each submitted papers to the French Academy of Sciences announcing their findings, both of which arrived on the same day, leading to the men sharing credit for the discovery of helium.

|
- 2:40.2 -
The length of time, down to the millisecond, that Monday's solar eclipse will last. According to
Astronomy Magazine,
"To experience that length, you’ll need to be slightly south of Carbondale, Illinois, in Giant City State Park. "
