T he Annual SIV Focus Meeting will be held June 10, 9 am - 1 pm at Wicked's Brew in Ventura

This year the focus meeting will be held at Wicked's Brew, 4561 Market St., Suite C, Ventura on Saturday, June 10 from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. This is one of our most important meetings where we establish our goals and objectives for the 2017 - 2018 Club year. We will also determine where and to whom we will disburse the funds raised for this purpose during the past year. Please bring all your ideas for areas to concentrate our efforts and fundraising activities, etc. that are centered on improving the lives of women and girls.

Later in the month, you will receive a copy of the Program Plan, which is the document that outlines all the various activities in which SI Ventura is engaged. From this document, we will determine which areas we want to focus on for this coming year and establish objectives for each of these areas. This is a very important meeting and all members are expected to attend.

We will also be voting for an outstanding group of candidates for our incoming 2017 - 2018 board. Please come to the June 10 focus meeting to vote for these candidates or any nominated from the floor.

SI Ventura's Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon a Big Success

The Soroptimist Club of Ventura held their annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon on May 10 at the Ventura Beach Marriott.  The attendance was great, the lunch was delicious and everyone was inspired by the amazing award winners.

The Live Your Dream Award was given to Desiree Rios. This scholarship is given to a local woman who is the primary wage earner in her family. It is meant to assist with meeting career/educational goals.

Our 2017 Violet Richardson Award recipient was Savana Gonzales. This scholarship is awarded to a local young woman, age 14-17, for her commitment to the betterment of our  community through her volunteer efforts. The scholarship is shared with the organization she has volunteered for.

We also drew three lucky winners for our beautiful trademark Mother's Day baskets, worth hundreds of dollars in value, from the raffle tickets that members sold.

The May 24 Program Meeting Introduced SIV to Foster Youth Involvement Opportunities

On Wednesday May 24 SI Ventura welcomed Laura Welbourn and her foster daughter Marisol Homan to the program meeting to speak about opportunities for our clubs involvement with foster youth in our community.

Laura Welbourn, Coordinator, Special Populations Educational Support at Ventura County Office of Education, spoke first about a multitude of programs in our community we could become involved in to help transform the lives and futures of foster youths.

Marisol Homan, a mother, college student and foster daughter to Laura, spoke next about her life as a foster child and all the important people that had roles in nurturing her goals in higher education.

This was an inspiring program meeting and hopefully we will find a way to become involved that meshes with our mission to improve the lives of women and girls in our community.

Presidents
Message

Hello SI Ventura members, supporters and friends. June is the month when SI Ventura elects our new slate of officers and new Board members are installed. Congratulations to our 2017/2018 leadership. (Keep an eye out for the July newsletter!)

And this is my last monthly message. I am so grateful to this year's Board who stepped in to help when I was under the weather. We worked through a year of transition. I have learned so much from all of you.

A year of change...and success. We continued our activities supporting women and girls. And at the end of the day, that's what it's all about!

Now.... onward to the future.
