Apply for the Small Business Celebration
We had a terrific response to our call for nominations to the Chamber's 2017 Small Business Celebration. More than 200 local businesses were nominated for this year's SBC!

Now comes the critical part - applying for this year's Small Business Celebration. The SBC application process helps you evaluate and gain insight in to what makes your business special. SBC nominees will be contacted this week and encouraged to apply. It's also a great opportunity to promote your business to the community. All SBC applicants will be featured at the SBC Candidates Showcase, a public event to celebrate our SBC participants set for April 5 from 5 - 7 p.m. at NMC's Hagerty Center.

Kevin Schlueter of Kalkaska Screw Products, a past Hagerty Small Business of the Year, talks about why your company should apply in this video. Check it out to learn more about why your company should apply for  the Small Business Celebration.

Chamber Welcomes Congressman Bergman
New Michigan First District Congressman Jack Bergman met with some of the Chamber's leadership and community-builder members and board members in Traverse City last week, updating the members on a busy opening of the 115th Congress. Congratulations to Rep. Bergman on his election as president of the 28-member House freshman class, and his appointments to the Budget, Natural Resources and Veterans Affairs committees. Bergman updated the group on the negotiations on the upcoming budget, tax reform and the Affordable Care Act. Russ Knopp, chair of the Chamber's Government Relations Committee, relayed the Chamber's support for infrastructure improvements including a new Soo Lock. He also discussed the Chamber's support for the H2B Visa program that helps bolster the region's workforce, and the need for right-sized solutions for Northern Michigan as opposed to a "one size fits all" approach from the federal government.

Thanks to Congressman Bergman for meeting with Chamber representatives, and we look forward to welcoming him back for future membership events.

Support Transformational Investment in Northern Michigan
A series of bills backed by the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance to create state incentives to help redevelop some of Michigan's most-challenged properties was backed by the state Senate last week and are moving on to the state House for review.

Learn more about this "transformational brownfield" legislation in   this report from Government Relations Director Kent Wood.
