New Survey Available

We've been inviting apprentices, pre-apprentices and early-career journeypersons to join the Apprentices in Canada ePanel at colleges in Ontario, Nova Scotia and British Columbia so far this year. These groups can help shape our understanding of the challenges they face by sharing their insights and experiences.

A new survey asks about the quality of workplace training. Findings from this and other ePanel surveys provide valuable insight and help us identify where the apprenticeship community can offer effective supports. Encourage any apprentices you know to share their views at apprenticesincanada.com.

Harmonization

The Harmonization Initiative was launched by the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship to align apprenticeship systems across Canada by making training requirements more consistent in the Red Seal trades. Harmonization aims to improve the mobility of apprentices, support an increase in their completion rates and enable employers to access a larger pool of apprentices.

On May 16th, we will be joined by Jeff Ritter, CEO of the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission, and Chris Stubbs, Project Control Analyst for Interprovincial Harmonization. They will provide an update on progress four years into the initiative.

Regional Roundtable - Winnipeg

Building Blocks for Youth Success in the Trades

Efforts to inform and attract youth to the skilled trades must be accompanied by information about what it takes to be successful. In partnership with Skills/Compétences Canada, we will look at three competency areas that young people must develop on the path to trades certification - essential skills, technical skills and employability skills - and brainstorm ways the apprentice community can better ensure parents and educators know what it takes to excel as an apprentice.

Aboriginal Engagement

Across the country, savvy organizations are building strategic partnerships and integrating Aboriginal apprentices into their skilled trades workforces. Two new web resources have just been posted, created in partnership with stakeholders to offer tips that can be used in workplaces.

Canada's largest private-sector union, Unifor - a CAF-FCA Champion member - shares its strategies for creating a welcoming workplace and retaining employees from diverse groups.

Learn about Manitoba Hydro's commitment to hiring and discover policies and best practices that have led this major energy utility to employ an 18% Indigenous workforce.

National Youth Employment Conference

Youth + Jobs = Better Future

Building on regional workshops held earlier in the year, CAF-FCA is inviting youth from across Canada to participate in a discussion about youth employment and learn about the excellent opportunities in the skilled trades. We will host a National Conference on Youth Employment on November 9, 2017 in Ottawa.

Youth are invited to share their ideas and strategies for overcoming youth unemployment and/or engaging young people in the skilled trades. Twenty youth from across the country will be invited to the National Capital (travel and accommodation provided) to participate in the conference.

Pre-Apprenticeship Funding for Conestoga

Conestoga College's Guelph Trades campus will receive $250,000 of Ontario's $14 million Pre-Apprenticeship Training funding program. The investment will boost readiness of students entering a variety of the school's trade apprenticeship programs.
