Small and Mighty Acts and the Library are cosponsoring a series on civics, being constructive in our discourse, and better understanding the legislative process.
Pathways to Civil Leadership Presented by Debbie Kelly of the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership Wednesday, April 5th 5-7pm
This workshop will explore ways to make change through politics, service, community organizing and more. Open to all! While there is no set entry price, donations will be collected to cover our guest's travel.
Constructive Conflict Presented by Marisa Cornell of the Mediation and Restorative Justice Center Wednesday, April 12th 5-7pm Conflict, in itself, is neither positive nor negative - its value lies in how we respond to it. In this workshop, participants will explore conflict as an opportunity to learn, grow, reconnect, and ultimately, to create change. We will also discuss personal vantage points and develop productive conflict resolution strategies by constructing and manipulating creative representations of the physical and psychological "spaces" in which disputes occur.
Bills - How to Find and Understand Them Presented by Justin Edge, NC Community Lawyer Wednesday, April 26th 5-7pm
In this session of the Civics Series, a community development lawyer will give you a hands-on, practical dip into the resources and tools used by policymakers and advocates, including how to access local, state, and federal bills and laws, committees and boards, public hearings, and the legislators and staff themselves. Donations will be accepted to cover our guest's travel.

Researching the Homework Gap
|
If you're a parent of a K-12 student, you may spend hours each week driving your children to a nearby McDonalds or Starbucks to use their Wi-Fi because internet is not available to your house or it's too expensive. Or trek to the local library multiple times a week so your kids can use the computers because your digital device is broken, being used by one of your other children, or you don't have one at home because buying one doesn't fit in your budget.
This is what it's like to live in the homework gap. The gap occurs when K-12 teachers assign homework that requires access to the internet, but the students don't have internet access in their homes. Nationwide, an estimated 5 million school-age children suffer from the homework gap.
If you live in NC and have K-12 students, take the below survey to help NC Broadband and The Friday Institute gather valuable data on the homework gap in NC to design solutions.
