Upper Chattahoochee Chapter #436 - Trout Unlimited

April 2013
Greetings!

Get out your calendars, I-phones, smart phones and Blackberries and mark down UCCTU's three important activities this summer.

June 15, our Chapter is both a sponsor and a participant in the Riverkeeper's Chattahoochee River Race.  We've worked hard to keep it clean and full of trout, register and join me and other UCCTU paddlers. See below for details.

July 13 is our only Back-the-Brookie work day. Spend the morning on beautiful  XXXX creek, ankle deep in clean cold brook trout water.  There are rocks and logs and activities for volunteers of all abilities.  Learn where to fish for Georgia native brook trout next year.  Watch for further details next month.

August 10 we are back on the Hooch for a paddle cleanup with the Riverkeeper.  This will be our last conservation activity of the year.  Don't miss it!

Finally, this month please join me in thanking Mark Romzick for his unending efforts running our monthly raffle and auctions.  They have widespread participation as members take advantage of deals on fishing accessories.  And the revenue they generate helps fund Chapter conservation and education activities.  when you see Mark struggling with his bins either into or out of our meeting, give him and hand and tell him "Thanks".

Sincerely,
Brad

Come and learn how to tie into one of these "big pigs" that have become a favorite of fly fisherman.  Learn a great new target species for our warm water months.  Henry is always entertaining!

TU Georgia Council "Fly -Tie-Athlon" Results

Saturday, March 9 a team from UCCTU joined teams from 8 other Georgia TU chapters in a high visibility fly tying event set up by the Georgia Council at Bass Pro Shops in Norcross.

Total income from the event was $6302, of which UCCTU pledges made up $769.

UCCTU retained 30% of its fundraising contribution, as did most Chapters.  A portion of the GA Council balance is earmarked for Smithgall Woods.  The GA TU Chapter presidents are determining if a portion also will be donated to another cause.

TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM RELEASE DAY
 TIC release 4.2013
Despite poor weather for human participants, conditions were ideal for St. John Neuman's release.  Pictured above(L-R) are UCCTU volunteers Bill Phinney, Bob Foster, and Program Chairman Tom Schmeltzer, along with 2nd Grade St. John Neuman teacher Karen Hoban.

RIZZIO CLINIC CANCELLED FOR 2013
Thank you to all of you who volunteered to be instructors at this year's planned Rizzio Fly Fishing Clinic scheduled for May 4.

With just weeks to go before the event, and only a handful of registered students, The decision was made to cancel for this year.  We've seen this in the past, and the result may be that Rizzio is scheduled on an every other year basis.

FLY FISHING FOR VETS
Approximately 150 volunteers showed up on Saturday, April 20 for Fly Fishing for Vets.  Unfortunately the weather kept many vets home

Thanks to UCCTU members Mack Martin, Tom Hayes, Dutch Earle, Don Brown, and Jim Harvey who turned out to help.

Chapter leaders Kevin McGrath and Brad Cruickshank represented the Chapter at the TU Southeastern Meeting in West Virginia March 22- 23.  The working sessions were excellent.  Through networking with other Chapters, Brad came back excited about the idea of UCCTU hosting a north Atlanta screening of the "Fly Fishing Film Tour".

Congratulations to UCCTU member and Roswell Police Department officer, Mark MacDonald on his recent promotion on the force.  Unfortunately Mark's new duties necessitate that he resign as Chapter Program Chairman.  Please contact Chapter President Brad Cruickshank if you have an interest in serving the Chapter in this vital role.
