April 15, 2018: Year 8; Edition 8

When asked what NOVA Open "is," I always point out the warmth and friendship, the fun and family feel, the party atmosphere in the NOCF Lounge, and the really well-run events helmed by its passionate leads. But first and foremost, it's charity. It is our raison d'être

The NOVA Open is far different from what we imagined it would be in the beginning. Who knew a simple 40K Picnic in the Park fundraiser for Breast Cancer research would lead to "the" East Coast Convention for Tabletop Wargamers? The NOVA Open is a diverse and interesting social gathering that many describe as a family reunion. It might have been easy to sever our roots, but we support charities; that commitment made us and continues to bind us today.

The NOVA Open staff is feverishly preparing for what has already become the largest convention we've run to date. While it's always fun to talk about the different events that are near to selling out (GTs, Nationals, Seminars), please bear with me while I point to the NOCF raffle ending tomorrow at noon.

I hope everyone reading this newsletter today will consider taking a chance on winning the SAGA Vikings Warband. It may not be your game, but profits from this raffle support Doctors Without Borders. Since its inception in 2013, NOCF has annually donated .95% of all online raffle dollars designated to DWB/MSF in your name, the worldwide tabletop wargamer. As a result, this amazing charity only knows us as an extraordinarily generous group of hobbyists who have not failed to support them in over 5 years. They reach out to NOCF regularly and we are listed in their annual report of significant donors. That's quite an accomplishment, so let's keep the ball rolling. Be the Compassionate Force they know you are - buy some chances on winning the SAGA Warband today. It's what we do and it's for a Great Cause.

And, if that isn't enough to swell the ranks with pride, the NOCF Board of Directors has asked me to recognize an amazing achievement by the NOVA Open attendees who registered in the month of March. You may have noticed a button at check out which allows anyone interested to donate directly to NOCF. You did it in force! Thanks to our attendees, NOCF received $1155 in cash donations. We've been told these funds will directly support the Foundation Lounge at NOVA Open this year. You People Rock!

All that said, enjoy our April 15 newsletter, and take some time to register for your favorite events - or maybe a couple of our new seminars. Look at the charity army (currently 'on tour' at Salute in London) and buy a few tickets to show your support of the NOCF and DWB/MSF. Enjoy the beautiful weather that's creeping our way, and if there's a way you can help others this month - whether it's volunteering with a local activity or contributing to a favorite cause - don't hesitate. It's what we do!

Can't wait to welcome you this Labor Day!
Mike Brandt

HOTEL CONTRACT UPDATES
The NOVA Open has received many reports that the Hyatt's block is fluctuating. What that means is people booked rooms early and have since dropped their reservations. We recommend you use the Hyatt booking link: https://aws.passkey.com/go/NOVA18 until you are locked out.

The NOVA Open has contracted with the Marriott Courtyard next door at $99/night with half-price parking. They have only 40 doubles and 10 have been reserved. When the Courtyard block is full, NOVA Open will consider contracting with the Marriott Renaissance, located just outside Hyatt's back doors. Marriott booking link: https://bit.ly/2J9hzcO

IMPORTANT AGE OF SIGMAR UPDATES
This year, we will require hobby standards which will be detailed in the event packet to promote and reward hobby efforts. All armies must be fully based on appropriate round or oval bases. A base size conversion will be provided to assist players with armies on square bases to convert onto round bases.

We have also changed our painting standard and will require armies painted to a tabletop level, rewarding effort as well as skill. In order to remain as current as possible, we will be using the latest FAQ’s, as well as the most current General's Handbook, at the time of the event.

New Battletomes released after August 11th will not be legal for use at the event.

The KidsHammer event is the exception to the basing and painting standards.

VENDOR NEWS
TABLEWAR IS IN THE HALL
TABLEWAR® is back in full force again this year at the Nova Open. A long-time sponsor, TABLEWAR has been coving gaming tables at the Nova Open with its iconic F.A.T. Mat gaming mats. This year we add another 100+ Mats to the NOVA Open tabletops.

The F.A.T. Mat is the original neoprene-backed gaming mat and is the number one selling gaming surface. It is of the highest quality: highly detailed and thoughtful designs, highest quality material, water resistant, complimentary carry/storage bag and F.A.T. Tag ID tag. These mats require such minimal storage space, there are no limits to what you can own.

 Visit TABLEWAR at www.tablewar.com

Here are what some of our community friends say about the F.A.T. Mat:
“The F.A.T. mats have been absolutely awesome for our battle reports. They have allowed us to field a variety of terrain without having to build large bulky boards that end up taking up too much space. The quality is great. They look great, they’re durable, and they pack up small, which is awesome for our limited storage space filled with miniatures and terrain. I highly recommend these mats for your basement, gaming club, store, event, or anything else where you need a good looking board that packs up well.” - Mathew Glanfield, MiniWarGaming
“F.A.T. Mats are the official gaming mats of Bell of Lost Souls. They bring our games to life, are durable and easy to store. We would never go back to a plain tabletop again.” - Larry Vela, BoLS Interactive LLC

Seminar Spotlight:
BANSHEE: Designing Colors for Space Marine Armies
In this class, award winning artist and top-level instructor, Alfonso 'Banshee" Giraldes will introduce you to basic color theory. He will help you understand and discover different color combinations which will make your space marines armies unique and visually appealing.

Alfonso designed this class to help hobbyists get over that basic fear of painting. He will focus on avoidance of "color recipes.” Banshee believes in painting without constraints by looking to near-perfect blending skills.

Students will be provided five space marines for practice in class. A limited quantity of brushes and paints will be available for class use; NOVA Open encourages students to bring their own brushes.
Seminar Spotlight:
Welcome New Instructor, Alexis Buckles
Having the physical energy and mental clarity to show up the way you want at a big event like the NOVA Open (or your next life challenge) can mean the difference between victory and defeat. In order to prepare for challenges on and off the gaming table, join Alexis Buckles, CHHWC, CAPP, and Warhammer Fantasy enthusiast on Sunday, September 2 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM for a 45-minute discussion that will explore the idea of holistic (whole person) wellness and how small changes can add up to make a big impact on your well-being. She will be covering topics, including:

  • Nutrition – How to fuel your body at the gaming tables and beyond
  • Movement – Finding ways to move outside of a gym
  • Stress Management – Tips and tools to change your state
  • Self-Care – Building a plan of action to re-charge your batteries

You will leave the discussion with practical tips and techniques that you can use during tournaments or in your daily life. In the same way that you can put together an OP army list, you have the power and the ability to min/max your life and unleash the wellness warrior within. The session will conclude with a Q&A session where you can ask her about her Santa-themed Ogre Kingdoms army.

In addition to being certified as a health and wellness coach, Alexis also holds certificates in plant-based nutrition and applied positive psychology. She is passionate about supporting people in achieving their goals and is always on the lookout for opportunities to bring these topics into the gaming community.

Seminar Spotlight:
Roman Lappat's 3-Day Workshop
Roman Lappat, of Massive Voodoo, will arrive at NOVA Open 2018 early to teach his popular JAR’s Beginner Painting Class. The class is actually a three-day Workshop that is being offered for the first time EVER in the U.S.

Designed primarily for beginners, Roman takes his students on a journey through art history to explain how all aspects of light/shadow, contrasts, color harmony and storytelling can play together in theory and practical exercise. Journeymen and Professionals welcome. Workshop topics include:

  1. Learn to see your world with different eyes
  2. Introduction into basing composition
  3. Learn how to feel harmony in different aspects
  4. Important contrasts for figure painting
  5. Explanation about how to paint a light situation on your figure
  6. Understand color theory and learn how to use it properly
  7. Learn about different materials, their unique properties and learn to paint them
  8. Learn to lose fear of doing something wrong

During the class, students will build and paint a model not only learn to improve painting skills, but also to learn the 'why?' behind everything. Roman's intention will be to explain "the why," so students will be knowledgeable enough to bring the lessons with them each time they paint in the future.

JAR's Beginner Painting Workshop will be taught from
Sunday, August 26, to Tuesday, August 28

Roman will also be teaching a series of hands-on hobby and display seminars at the NOVA Open, including:

  • Introduction to Display Painting
  • Creating a Composition and Story with Miniatures
  • Dramatic Lighting
  • Introduction to Display Painting
ART & HOBBY EVENTS
THE CAPITAL PALETTE HAS MADE SOME MAJOR CHANGES TO ITS 2018 FORMAT
The most obvious change is the introduction of three new divisions to compete in: Apprentice, Journeyman, and Masterclass . This requested change to our format will allow participants to choose what skill level they wish to compete in, from the proverbial "newbie" to the multi award-winning master painter.

We also added some new language to our entry requirements which addresses some things that might normally be assumed, but merited official rules. Finally, there are new NOVA Open Staff participation rules regarding areas they are (and are not) allowed compete in.

If you have any questions about the competition, please take a look at the new rules or email  customerservice@novaopen.com
