First Church News & Updates - April 20, 2018
Thanks to volunteers

Today, April 20, is Volunteer Recognition Day...a reminder to appreciate and thank the many tireless First Church volunteers for all of their selfless work. Who are they? Sunday school teachers, student mentors, VBS volunteers, ushers, greeters, musicians, office volunteers, lay leaders, retired clergy, care callers, disaster relief volunteers, and so many more that do tasks large and small to keep First Church running smoothly. They all definitely deserve our utmost respect and appreciation, which is exactly what Volunteer Recognition Day is all about. Thank you!

Spotlight on...the Church Mouse program
Church Mouse
What is the Church Mouse Program?
The Church Mouse Program is a program in which families in the church adopt college students. They cover them in prayer, send encouraging notes and little gifts. Currently, our college kids are starting to prep for finals and the Church Mouse Program wants to make sure that each student receives a gift card. A great way to participate in the encouragement and blessing of these students is to contribute to funding these gift cards. Click here to participate.

What a Feeling! POPS Handbell Concert
There are only a few table tickets left for Pops 2018. However, there are plenty of  general admission (concert only) tickets available. These are free and allow the audience member a seat at this fun event. Ticket table will be outside the North Suite of the Sanctuary on Sunday, April 22 at 9:30 am.  The Pops concert begins at 6:30 pm on May 5 in the Family Life Center. You won't want to miss it!
Children's Ministry
VBS
We need you to be a VBS Crew Leader!
If you have already volunteered and registered for Shipwrecked VBS in June 2018,  thank you! If you are able to volunteer this summer but have not registered, please register today. In addition to being a fun week in the summer, VBS is a mission! We have opened registration for Kindergarten-4th Grade and the 5th Grade Mission program. Only preschool age children are required to have a volunteer. However, the more adult volunteers we have, the more children we can serve. We would love to have 200 children both weeks! Can you help make this goal a reality? Click here for more information and to volunteer!

Discovering Life-Truths

New study begins this Sunday, April 22
Discovering Life-Truths Analogies from Nature Scenes  begins April 22, 9:40 am in Bldg. 5-148. The study will be led by First Church member and acclaimed photographer, Ted Keller. It will be based on his devotional book,  Fifty Feisty Photos for Daily Encouragement.

Ted says, "As a nature photographer with a 'glass-half-full' outlook, I began to recognize visual analogies of motivational life-truths in my images as I recalled relevant Bible verses. Since the level of optimism in our attitudes and self-concepts affects our ability to cope, heal, grow, and excel in life, these energizing reminders can empower and strengthen us in all situations."   Please join us!

Heifer Project

Children's Ministry Mission for Spring is the Heifer Project
For the entire spring semester, all children's Sunday School offerings are going toward the purchase of livestock for needy families. Each class selected a certain animal as their goal to purchase. Heifer International puts faith into action with its time proven principle of passing on the gift. Every family who receives livestock agrees to pass on one or more of its animal's offspring to another neighbor in need.
Heifer Project Update
4.15.2018 Update:  Several classes have reached their initial goal and set a new goal!  Each class has high expectations to reach the goal of purchasing their chosen animal by May 20. The fifth grade could very possibly reach their goal of purchasing a heifer this Sunday, April 22. It will be a cause for a celebration!
