Timing "The Talk:" Long Term Care Planning

Most people agree it isn't an easy topic to broach-"Hey ma, you're getting old and I'm worried you might get hurt while home alone." And as much as you don't want to say it, chances are your aging parents are reluctant to hear it. No one wants to face the possibility of losing his or her independence. Timing is everything when it comes to making good decisions about long term care--don't wait until you are in the middle of a crisis. Setting aside time to have a discussion with your parents about their finances and personal preferences regarding their health care as they age can ensure a smoother transition when and if the time comes.

Heart Healthy Recipe

The warm weather means it is time to start grilling! Lighten up your typical burger by trying the Mayo Clinic's Black Bean Burger with Chipotle Ketchup. Black beans are high in fiber and low in saturated fat and cholesterol, making them a much healthier choice than a beef patty.

Are You a Caregiver?

According to the United Hospital Fund's Next Step in Care guide, you are a caregiver if the following applies:
  • You take care of someone with a chronic illness or disease
  • Manage medications or talk to doctors or nurses on someone else's behalf
  • Help bathe or dress someone who is frail or disabled
  • Take care of household chores, meals, or bills for someone who cannot do these things alone
It can be hard for someone to call themselves a caregiver, especially if they are helping a parent or spouse. But accepting your role for what it is can be an important step in the process. It can open up access to various support services and ensure you are an active participant in any dialogue with medical professionals about the condition of and care your loved one is receiving. Recognizing your role as caregiver can also help you accept that you can't shoulder this enormous burden alone. You will need help, whether it be from family, friends, or an in-home care agency. 10% Happier by Dan Harris

Overview:

Nightline anchor Dan Harris embarks on an unexpected, hilarious, and deeply skeptical odyssey through the strange worlds of spirituality and self-help, and discovers a way to get happier that is truly achievable.

After having a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure, involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had both propelled him through the ranks of a hyper-competitive business and also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out.

We all have a voice in our head. It's what has us losing our temper unnecessarily, checking our email compulsively, eating when we're not hungry, and fixating on the past and the future at the expense of the present. Most of us would assume we're stuck with this voice - that there's nothing we can do to rein it in - but Harris stumbled upon an effective way to do just that. It's a far cry from the miracle cures peddled by the self-help swamis he met; instead, it's something he always assumed to be either impossible or useless: meditation. After learning about research that suggests meditation can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essentially rewire your brain, Harris took a deep dive into the underreported world of CEOs, scientists, and even marines who are now using it for increased calm, focus, and happiness.

10% Happier takes readers on a ride from the outer reaches of neuroscience to the inner sanctum of network news to the bizarre fringes of America's spiritual scene, and leaves them with a takeaway that could actually change their lives.
