This month we get to celebrate a success; yet we also must confront a failure.
The 4th annual "Sweep the Hooch" river clean-up on Saturday, April 12 was a great success. Thank-you to Kevin McGrath who organized our participation again this year. And thank-you to the 24 UCCTU team members who joined others to clean up Jones Bridge. Other TU Chapters, The Georgia Women Fly Fishers, The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, the National Park Service, and their volunteers cleaned up an additional 27 sites along the river from Buford Dam to Paces Mill. Nearly 600 volunteers picked up arecord 7.275 tons of trash. How many injuries and pairs of torn waders did that prevent?
On a more sobering subject, Jim Harvey, Bill Malloy and other Chapter volunteers generously devoted their time and energy to organizing the 2014 Sam Rizzio Youth Fly Fishing Clinic to be held on May 3. They did a great job promoting it via the web, e-mail, fly shops and personal invitations. Unfortunately only 3 campers volunteered by last week's deadline and the event was cancelled for the second year in a row. We now clearly understand that this clinic is not a "Field of Dreams". Yet the future of TU is in passing on our great sport and our love of the outdoors to the younger generations. We need to figure this out. Your Chapter leadership will be working to direct our resources in a more strategic manner in order to effectively carry out our mission of youth mentoring. We are always open to ideas and volunteers.
