A Note from the School Council

It was good to see everyone at MCCA's recent International Night. Mashallah, it was a fantastic display that showcased our school's diverse heritages. So many events and activities at our school would not be possible without the hard work and meticulous planning of our MCCA parents at both campuses. May Allah (swt) reward them for all the work they do to ensure that our children stash away special memories of their days and years at MCCA.

Mashallah, MCCA Council is extremely pleased to learn that many of the current 8th grade students are moving on to competitive, selective enrollment schools and honors programs such as Northside College Preparatory High School, Northridge Academy, Saint Viator, Lane Tech and some of the best public high school honors and AP programs in the area. The success of our students is testament to the high quality, rigorous education MCCA provides its students.

Great news for students returning from spring break - the play lot will have new rubber mulch making it much safer for the kids. As the weather gets warmer our children enjoy the outdoors. Please talk to your children regarding following safety rules including stranger danger. Also, it is important that they dress in layers, proper shoes and are otherwise prepared to play outdoors.

Please try to attend MCC General Body meetings. This is the best way to learn where we are as a community and what we are doing. It is also a time to have our concerns heard.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact Farisa Hussain:  [email protected]

Middle School Students Win at Islamic Knowledge Competition

Middle School students did a stellar job at the Islamic Knowledge Competition held at CPSA this week, competing alongside students from 10 different Islamic schools across the greater Chicagoland area. Students answered questions spanning the topics of fiqh, seerah, history and general Islamic knowledge. After playing three rounds, 8th Grader Sulayman Mateen and 7th Grader Aisha Siyadath's teams won first prize. 6th Grader Omar Siddiqi's team came in second and 8th Grader Naima Chaudhry, 7th Grader Jibreel Saleh and 6th Grader Fatima Quadri's teams came in 3rd place. By showcasing their knowledge, students were reminded of the Prophetic tradition in which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah makes the way to Jannah easy for him who treads the path in search of knowledge." The event truly served to be a reminder to us all, young and old, that although the path of knowledge can be arduous to tread, the fruit it bears is precious. JazakAllahkhairun to Islamic Studies Teacher Iram Shaikh for paving the way for these students, alhumdilAllah.
MCCA Crescent Boys Basketball Team Takes Second at Competition

As the weather gets warmer and the countdown to summer gets shorter, that can only mean one thing: basketball season is over. From November through March the gym has been filled with yelling, clapping, sneaker screeches, and a buzz that surrounds anyone and everyone involved in the mission to be accomplished. The one rule in life you need to remember and willingly accept as a coach is that you can't win them all, not in life and not in a game either. When you have a target on your back, its hard to always keep your head high and focus on the game itself. With there being so many intangibles you can't control, its just another challenge to overcome. Players play and coaches coach. Thats how this game works. Taking home 2nd place and finishing 6-3 this year was definitely a humbling experience and it can only help us going into next year. The hunger is officially back. The leaves can't start to fall fast enough. God. Character. Family. Hard Work and Hustle. The Crescent Way. -- submitted by Coach Kadir Oz

Urdu Club Students Advancing Skills

We are having fun at Urdu Club every Friday where we learn to read, write and speak in Urdu! We memorized many fun poems, too! This week we learned some opposites and plurals! Learning Numbers in Urdu has become kids' favorite activity now! Always excited for Urdu Club - Can't wait till next Friday!!  --  Mrs. Khadija & Mrs. Razia

Ms. Iram Shaikh - Islamic Studies

5th Grade: 5th-graders are finding out what respect means to them! We collaborated and created a community poem defining respect, examples of it, and how we as Muslims exemplify it to all of Allah's (swt) creation. By creating the poem, students worked together to discover that respect begins with them on an individual basis and is then spread to everything else, highlighting the Prophetic tradition that "Kindness is a mark of faith, and whoever does not have kindness does not have faith."

6th grade: 6th-graders are learning to bite their tongue! As we kicked off our unit study of diseases of the tongue, 6th-graders journaled, discussed, and learned the reality behind the Prophetic tradition which states "Most of your sins are because of your tongues." Students learned about searing, lying, and backbiting, among other diseases of the tongue, and learned of their spiritual and worldly harms, and came up with strategies to refrain from doing them. Students brainstormed in groups and collaborated to create skits that not only highlight how these habits negatively impact one's imaan, but how they can eradicate them from their lives as well.

Mrs. Gomaa - 5A

5th Grade Touchdown!
Very recently, Mrs Gomaa's 5th-graders finally reached their class touch down. This was determined by their team work, behavior, organization, readiness for class and participation since the beginning of the year. To celebrate, Mrs Gomaa set up an ice cream social and a fun, educational film for the kids. May Allah (sw) help them continue to grow into successful students and leaders of our community, inshallah!

Mrs. Barkat - Middle School Social Studies

Seventh grade students, both sections A and B, made Lewis, Clark or Sacajawea diaries in order to develop their skills of empathetic writing in a historical context. They were to choose one of the three explorers and write five illustrated entries describing their journey with a partner. Overall, they did an excellent job. Students also went above and beyond, looking up different sources of information, and coming back to present this knowledge to the class.

Sixth grade students are currently studying ancient Greece. In order to better understand the Grecian foundations of America's democratic system, they made an 8-part illustrated panel highlighting the Athenian road to democracy. Students put their amazing artistic skills to work to create beautiful finished products. Some students even placed their comic skills into the projects making them extremely witty.
Mrs. Pathan - 4A

The fourth grade interfaith program, Poetry Pals, had concluded this past Wednesday, with students performing for their parents at the evening event. The event included MCC Academy, Sacred Heart, and Chicago Jewish Day School. It was a great turnout with over 100 people that attended. We give a special thanks to the 4th grade parents who came out on a school night and to the PSG for helping so much throughout especially with decorating and providing refreshments. During this evening event, parents got a chance to see what students typically did during a poetry pals session. Students practiced their performances while parents had an opportunity to mingle with one another and discuss their different religions. Students then returned and performed their poem. The evening ended with refreshments. 4th grade will miss Poetry Pals next year, however, they made new friends to hold onto.

Mrs. Motiwala - 1B

This month has been eventful in Mrs. Motiwala's beach! We are continuing to become science experts. This month, we learned about the life cycle of a butterfly. Students had a chance to make the butterfly life cycle with pasta! We had an in-school field trip where cold-blooded animals came to our school! Students had a chance to pet and see many animals.  Some of the animals included snake, armadillo and sloth. The first-grade teachers were very brave and even held the snake!

In math we are learning addition and subtraction with regrouping. Students had a chance to use play doh to show addition with regrouping.

Mrs. Nuhad, Mrs. Lena, Mrs. Khawla - Pre-K Arabic

Pre-K A ,B & C have been busy learning about the letter ( Ain - ع ) in Arabic. They enjoyed eating green grapes ( enab - عنب ) and making colorful birds (osfour - عصفور ).

Mrs. Baig - 2B

3,2,1... Blast off! Mrs. Baig's class concluded their solar system unit by creating foil art. Students imagined themselves in space by gluing foil cut-outs of the moon, a spaceship and stars onto black construction paper. As spring is approaching, second grade has been focusing on a weather unit with concepts such as reasons for all of the four seasons and the tools used to measure weather. Furthermore, second-graders learned how various clouds are used to predict weather. They also made clouds from cotton balls and labelled the type of cloud for art. Then, they watched a National Geographic video called "Top Ten Natural Disasters" and realized how weather can effect an entire area.

In social studies, students made amazing detailed brochures on the 50 states! Each child presented each state's fun facts including: the state bird, flower, population, landmark, and more. WHAT TIME IS IT? In math, we have mastered telling time. Students were able to use mini clocks with a partner to quiz each other after the chapter was done. In reading, they read a story called "The Sign-maker's Assistant."  The story was about the main character who created silly signs that eventually brought chaos to the community. Students were then given the opportunity to create their own silly signs. After creating signs, they explained the effects of each sign if it were to be followed.

A special thanks to the moms of Ammar Ibrahim, Ayah Nubani, and Rehan Mohammed who have volunteered for art these past few months. There are art availabilities for April if you're interested, please let me know.

Mrs. Rahman - Prek-C

We have been learning about our five senses with hands-on activities for each sense. For the sense of sight, we discussed how important our eyes are to see the beautiful world around us. For the sense of taste, we closed our eyes and tasted different kinds of snacks and guessed what the snack was. We smelled different things such as lotion, orange, onions and vinegar for the sense of smell. For the sense of touch, we touched different textures like smooth, hard, soft, and rough objects describing each feeling. Lastly, for the sense of hearing, we had material set in plastic eggs for the students to shake and guess what was inside. They loved learning about the senses with this hands-on activity that helped them realize the importance of each sense!

In Pre-k C we have also been learning about primary colors versus secondary colors! We were able to see mixtures of colors when Mrs. Rahman demonstrated the mixing of colored water in water bottles. Then, students were able to experience the color mixtures using their fingers and paint! My students were amazed to see the colors change in front of their eyes and had a lot of fun experiencing it themselves.

Mrs. Nabeel - 1C

Reading: My reading group enjoyed reading books by Dr. Seuss! We used the books to write our book reports. Students completed their book reports on "Present Boxes" to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday.

Math: My class has been working extremely hard on learning subtracting and adding numbers to 40 with and without regrouping.

Language Arts: Students created "All About  Dr. Seuss Hats" where they shared fun facts they learned from the biographies we read and the Brainpop we watched on Dr. Seuss. Our favorite Dr. Seuss activity was coming up with creative pen names for ourselves.

Science/Writing: We immensely enjoyed learning and petting the different animals that visited our school for our in-house field trip. Thank you Miss Patel for arranging such a wonderful experience for our students.  Students enjoyed becoming animal experts. Each was assigned a different animal and did an amazing job presenting interesting facts about the animal studied.
We learned extensively about frogs. We learned about the life cycle of frogs. As an extension of the lesson, students wrote about their lives as frogs. Students also got to create a fun frog craft with Mrs. Shethwala and Mrs. Bushra.

Mrs. Patel - 3A

Third-graders in Mrs. Patel's class have had an exciting month so far. Alhumdillilah, we started the month off with a cool animal show. Students learned about and interacted with a sloth, fruit bat, boa constrictor, and a bare-tailed marsupial. It was a fun-filled, in-house field trip for all. In reading, we read about a young girl from the Mexican culture and learned many Spanish words and facts about Mexico. We finished off the unit with our very own fiesta. Students were dressed in their own traditional clothing, made their own sombreros, and enjoyed tacos, chips and salsa. Thank you very much to our wonderful helpers. Mrs. Nadia Ashraf and Mrs. Rubena Syed worked tirelessly to make the tacos.  The highlight of the fiesta was the piñata. It was enjoyed by all. In math, students have been working very hard with their weekly timed tests. They have to complete 50 multiplication problems in 7 minutes. Congratulations to the following students who have completed memorizing their multiplication facts up to 12: Ayyazul Hassan, Mansoor Mohiuddin, Ahmad Musa, Yusef Shehade, Aaleeyah Padela and Hesham Ghiasuddin. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to enjoying the beautiful Spring weather.

Mrs. Pathan - 4A

4th grade did an amazing job on their explorer projects. Students researched their assigned explorer, created a poster or diorama, and dressed up like the explorer during their presentation. Everyone did a great job! For science, we just started the human body systems. In groups, students are using their textbooks and public library books to research the body system that was assigned to them. Each group is researching a different system. Next week, they will present their systems: parts, functions, and other interesting facts by using their life size sample as a visual aid. Finally, a few weeks back, fourth grade went to the Chicago Jewish Day School to learn about the Jewish religion along with Sacred Heart School. After learning about Judaism and the synagogue, students broke up into groups and created poems. We have one more session at the Morton Grove campus at the end of the month along with Sacred Heart.

Miss Malik - 1A
We have had a fun-filled month.  In science, we became animal experts on an animal we selected in class.  Musa Baig's mom came in and did an animal art project with us.  The animal theme spread to our field trip too.  We watched the play "Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type."  After the trip, we made comparisons about the book and the play.  We were also able to classify the different animals in the story into the appropriate animal groups.  We love playing with PlayDoh and were so happy to have Zaid Ansari and Bilal Rama's moms come by and help us make some for our class.  To end the month, we celebrated the 100th Day of School.  We did a variety of activities such as making estimations about how many times we can blink, clap, jump, write our names, and count to 10 in 100 seconds.  We compared our estimations to our actual numbers.  We got a bit of a workout as well doing 100 jumping jacks and running in place for one hundred seconds.  We are looking forward to more learning next month and can't wait for warmer weather, Insha'Allah! .

Mrs. Taufique - KgC
February has been a short but eventful month!  We went on a field trip to see "Click Clack Moo" and we had our 100th day of school party. We've started to learn word problems in math!  It's an exciting time.  In science, we learned all about the parts of plants and we are about to begin seed germination projects.  In reading, we are getting better and better at blending sounds and combinations into words.  We've completed all of our long vowel sounds and we are starting vowel and consonant digraphs.  On our 100th day, students dressed up as 100-year-old people.  We had a class full of grannies and grandpas.  A very special thank you to Mrs. Nazneen Ayoob for completing art projects with our students twice a month. Alhamdulillah, we are so grateful to Allah for all of our achievements.

Mrs. Khawla, Mrs. Nuhad & Mrs. Lina  - PreK Arabic

PreK-A, B & C students were so excited to get together to watch a fun and engaging movie about all the letters that they have learned in Arabic so far. We started with Alef and stopped at Saad. The students sang songs with the movie and reviewed all their vocabulary.

Mrs. Lina - 3rd Grade Arabic

Students from 3A were excited to share information about their families and wrote a paragraph in Arabic about themselves and their families. They were also very creative in making floor plans and building models of their dream or real houses while using their new Arabic vocabulary. You can enjoy some of their creative work on display in the library.

Ms. Umar - Gym

This past month elementary students have started learning how to play soccer through participating in various drills. Students learned the proper technique for passing the soccer ball to their teammates and dribbling the ball between their feet. In middle school, students are alternating between learning how to play volleyball and doing strength training exercises using brand new equipment including power bands, jump ropes and fitness ladders. For volleyball, students participated in drills learning how to "bump" and "set" the ball.

Mrs. Akbany - PreK-B
In honor of the 100th day of school, PreK-B learned to count to 100.
Students made a crown displaying 100 in Arabic. They also made an
extra-large pizza with 100 toppings. For Dr. Seuss Day, students created a hat, just like the one the Cat in the Hat wears in the story. Students wrote out the -at family words on their hats. Students in Prek-B are focusing on phonics and learning to read 3-letter words.

Mrs. Nabeel - 1C

Math: Students continue to enjoy math centers where they get to practice their math skills at different stations. Our students in first grade are mastering the skill of place-value, comparing, ordering and finding number patterns for numbers up to 40. For Groundhog's Day, students enjoyed our mini-lesson where they got to share their predictions on a sticky note and come post it on the board. We used the data (predictions made) tally marks to compare the numbers.

Reading: We are learning that making good predictions requires using context clues from the text including the title, words and pictures. After a picture walk, students got to share their predictions about the fantasy "The Big Race" and post their sticky notes on the animal (character) that they thought would win the big race. We discussed as a class each student's reasoning and thinking process.

Writing: Students were told to think of their favorite books to warm up on a snowy day. Each student shared a good book to warm up with and why they recommend it.

Language Arts: Poets in the Making! First, students were paired with a partner and got the opportunity to interview and write a poem. We learned that poets have to be precise with their word choice so they can express their feelings in a handful of words. During a writing workshop, students completed their rough drafts and worked on revising their poems until they thought they were perfect and ready to be published. Our poems are displayed in the library.  We wanted to thank Miss Farah and Miss Lena for letting us interview them as a whole class for our friendship poems. We enjoyed brainstorming nouns, adjectives and verbs to describe these two amazing teachers who always help fill our buckets.

Science: We have been learning about animals. Students enjoyed watching a Brainpop video where they learned how to classify animals. We want to thank Mrs. Shethwala (Amira's mom) and Mrs. Bushra
(Abdurrahman's mom) for coming in to do a fun frog craft project with our class.

Miss Bozai - 2C

Spring is on it's way and 2C is welcoming it with open arms! It has been an exciting month of learning and new experiences. This month we had the opportunity to experience amazing reptiles up close during an in-house field trip. We also got dressed up for Spring picture day.

In reading, we read a story about a superhero dog named Dex and talked about the heroes in our lives. In math, we learned how to tell time. In science, we learned all about weather. We've had some fun art projects, including making silly putty with our parent volunteer Ms. Nazneen Ayoob.

It's been a great relief to start playing outdoors again and we hope everyone had a beautiful and sunny spring break!

Mrs. Sheikh - 2A

My second-graders have been working hard this last month. They researched the 50 states and made wonderful brochures on their states which are displayed in the library. My scientists conducted experiments on evaporation and condensation, as well as on rotation of the earth and the moon. They did fun projects on the solar system, types of clouds, and the water cycle. They used the thermometer to read the temperature of a particular day. In reading, they learned about famous and ordinary heroes and created Venn Diagrams to compare and contrast these heroes.

My mathematicians mastered reading time to the hour, half hour and quarter hour. They used individual clocks to demonstrate the different times.  I would like thank Mrs.Navaid and Mrs.Rana for volunteering their time to do art projects with the class.

Ms. Barkat - 5B

Ms. Barkat's 5th-grade reading class has been busy this past month with PLAY TIME! Students have been reading and analyzing plays and their different elements. The end of the unit was concluded with groups creating their own mini-plays with written scripts. They had a great time presenting their unique plays and did a fantastic job!

Mrs. Malik - Preschool

This month preschool went on a field trip to Shedd Aquarium and explored the vast sea life. We also talked about the five senses in class. We had a blindfolded taste-testing contest and we had three winners. We also had a contest to test the children's sense of smell. The activity the children enjoyed the most was the color mixing activity. We took the three primary colors (red, blue, yellow) to create new colors. Last month, the Skokie Public Library came and performed two puppet shows: "Critters Don't Make Good Pets" and "Art," which the children greatly appreciated. When we approached our new theme about outer space, the children made space ships, astronauts, stars, and planets.
