The Arts Opportunities newsletter is published by the Arizona Commission on the Arts to provide Arizona artists with relevant local, national and international opportunities. This monthly newsletter includes announcements of Arts Commission artists grants, programs and opportunities, along with a selection of current opportunities listed on the Arts Commission's website.

Funding Period: For activities taking place between March 1, 2016 and June 30, 2016
Professional Development Grants provide funding support for participation in artistic development and skills building activities or opportunities that contribute to professional growth and career development.

Master-Apprentice Award
Southwest Folklife Alliance Master-Apprentice Award
Deadline: Wednesday, June 1, 2016
The Southwest Folklife Alliance Master-Apprentice Award is designed to support the teaching/learning relationship between traditional artists and their apprentices. The goal of this award is to strengthen the transmission of community-based traditions throughout the Southwestern United States. The award supports a master artist or tradition bearer who has identified a qualified apprentice (or group of apprentices), to engage in a relationship that includes intensive learning, one-on-one mentorship and hands-on experience in his/her traditional artistic practice. 

Orientation sessions will be held as requested by communities or individuals. There are currently three public orientation sessions planned:

Arts Learning Collaboration Grants

Grant Award:
Funding Period: For projects taking place between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017.
Arts Learning Collaboration Grants enhance the work of arts educators, classroom teachers and school-based arts programs through collaborative projects taking place in-school (during regular school hours), after-school, or during summer/inter-session and in-services.
Lifelong Arts Engagement Grants
Deadline: 11:59pm, Thursday, May 5, 2016
Grant Award:
Funding Period: For projects taking place between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017.
Lifelong Arts Engagement Grants enhance the work of community and social service organizations/ governmental entities through partnership projects with professional teaching artists and/or arts organizations.

50th St. Light Rail Station Art Opportunity

Valley Metro Rail, Inc. is accepting statements of qualifications from artists interested in working with the community to create a unique and impactful artwork for the 50th Street Station. The total budget for the project is $250,000.

The Flagstaff Arts Council is currently seeking proposals for exhibitions to be held in both the Jewel Gallery and Main Gallery of the Coconino Center for the Arts, one of the largest professional gallery spaces located in northern Arizona. Artists, curators, organizations, schools and groups are welcome to apply with concepts for group or solo exhibitions.

Art Intersection seeks submissions of various mediums to take place in their All Art Arizona Juried Exhibition. The Juried Exhibition aims to celebrate visual arts created by Arizona residents. Call for New Members | Eye Lounge

Eye Lounge is currently reviewing applications for new members. It is an artist collective located right in the heart of Phoenix's art scene. Members receive one annual solo exhibition, in addition to a group show during Artlink's Art Detour weekend. Work will receive exposure, as well as allow artists to build relationships and connections that are a vital part of the arts community.

New York Center for Photographic Art

The New York Center for Photographic Arts invites photographers to submit images for a juried exhibition at the Jadite Gallery in Manhattan. Selected artists will receive $3,000 awards and will be featured in the Geometry 2016 catalog.

Juried Fine Art Exhibit | Animals in Art - Our Partners on the Planet
Smithtown Township Arts Council

The Smithtown Township Arts Council seeks work that celebrates artist's explorations of animals. The juried exhibition is scheduled to take place between July 30 and August 24, 2016. Work will be displayed at the Mills Pond Gallery. A total of $1,750 will be awarded. 
2016 Western Competition 
New American Paintings

Artists working in 2D media are invited to apply to have their work published in the upcoming October/November issue of the publication New American Paintings. This art periodical, published bimonthly has become a resource for collectors and art world professionals. 40 applicants will be selected by juror Claire C. Carter, Curator of Contemporary Art at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. 

Pre-Professional, Professional Dance Workshops | American Dance Festival
American Dance Festival

The American Dance Festival is a 6 and a half week program available to pre-professional and professional dancers and choreographers. The program is held at Duke University and areas of downtown Durham. There will be performances from visiting dance companies, as well as musicians, faculty, and other students.

The Frost Place will be hosting their Conference on Poetry between July 10-16, 2016. Join in with other writers as they take part in this intensive poetry camp filled with workshops, lectures, classes and more. 

Telluride Painting School

Telluride Painting School invites painters to apply for one of three 2-week long intensive painting workshops. Sessions will be taught by internationally accredited artists Ying Li, John Goodrich, and Ron Milewicz. These unique programs emphasize on helping artist's find and develop their voice within their work. Artists will work in small classroom settings in order allow for one-on-one experiences with the instructor.

City of Scottsdale and Scottsdale Cultural Council are currently accepting applications for the Community Arts Grants Program. The program provides art grants for creative projects that help support and give back to the Scottsdale community. 

Tempe Arts Grants

The City of Tempe has opened the 2016-2017 arts grant cycle. There are a total of six different grants accepting applications from individual artists, non-profit organizations, schools and students. These grants are intended to further support the Public Art and Cultural Amenities Goals.

Arizona Citizens for the Arts seeks a summer intern to focus on political research and dissemination of the information gained that may help arts-friendly voters make an informed decision about candidates. With state primaries in the fall and several school board elections coming up, the intern will be tasked with updating and administering candidate surveys, preparing voter education information to be shared through email software and on our website as well as other tasks related to new ballot initiatives, school board elections and city council elections that will affect the arts in Arizona.
Bilingual Teaching Artist

Childsplay is assembling a team of highly qualified, bilingual Teaching Artists to collaborate in the implementation of a dual language preschool literacy program. Funded by a grant through the Helios Foundation in partnership with Arizona State University, and the Osborn School District, this program will contribute to research surrounding the impact of dual language acquisition on literacy development in early learners.
