Sort Baby Items at Room to Grow
Room to Grow
Date/Time: Tuesday, April 5, 5:30 - 7:30pm
Location: Room to Grow, 142 Berkeley Street, Boston
Room to Grow provides parents raising babies in poverty with one-on-one parenting support and essential baby items for their child's critical first three years of development. Volunteers will be checking (i.e. playing with) toys, folding and shelving baby clothes, and organizing our client space so that it stays beautiful for the families we serve. This is an easy and fun way to contribute to the lives of children living in poverty. The program serves babies aged 0-3 and the work you do will help ensure that these babies have all of the books, toys, clothes, and supplies they need to have an awesome start in life. There isn't usually heavy lifting involved (unless you want to!!) and you don't have to worry about getting dirty. Please wear comfortable clothing as you may be sitting on the floor to sort and fold clothing.
Ages: Families with children five and older are welcome to participate. Children must be supervised.
Time Commitment: Two-hour shifts. Volunteers may also sign up for ongoing sorting and cleaning projects.

You and your family can spend the morning helping one of the wildlife sanctuaries get a jump on spring cleaning while you reconnect with nature.

Ages: Families with children are welcome to volunteer at most projects. Check individual projects for any specific age requirements. Children must be supervised by an adult.

Earth Day at Fresh Pond
Friends of Fresh Pond
Date/Time: Friday, April 22, 10am - 12:30pm
Location: Location at Fresh Pond TBD upon registration
A volunteer event perfect for both kids and adults! Come help remove garlic mustard, an invasive plant that crowds out native plants and puts toxins in the soil that inhibit native seeds from sprouting. Fortunately, it's easy to recognize and easy to pull! No experience necessary. All tools are provided. Long sleeves, pants and a water bottle are recommended. In addition, volunteers are invited to help sprout wildflowers around your home by making "seed-bombs" out of compost, clay and seeds! Take them home with you and spread throughout town. Native wildflower species are not only beautiful, they also provide nectar and seed for wildlife, and reduce erosion.
Ages: Everyone can participate. Children are welcomed and encouraged to volunteer with a supervising adult.

Family Service Day on the Farm!
The MSPCA at Nevins Farm

Location: The MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen
Many children want to help animals on a farm. Younger kids can experience what it's really like to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty on a farm - cleaning cages and mucking stalls! That's why they offer the MSPCA at Nevins Farm's "Family Service Day" series. Eleven times a year (most often on a Monday holiday), adult-child pairs are able to participate as hands-on volunteers at the MSPCA. Each group participates in three activities: an animal care chore, support chores, and an educational presentation that includes a fun activity and an animal meet and greet. Animal care chores include cleaning cat cages, walking gentle dogs, or mucking horse stalls. The program provides a fun and educational opportunity for families to make a meaningful contribution to the MSPCA's animal care efforts.
- Participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
- All registered families will be contacted via email, one week prior to their registered session, with additional program details.
- There is a program registration fee of $20 per pair (due at registration, non-refundable), and the proceeds help support our many animal care and adoption programs.
Ages: Children ages 7-11 with a parent or guardian. For families with more than one child who wants to participate, another adult is required to attend.

Family Table Food Distribution
Jewish Family & Children's Services (JF&CS)

Family Table is New England's largest kosher food pantry, providing healthy food on a monthly and emergency basis to individuals and families in need. Volunteers help set up the pantry, sort food donations, package orders for recipient families, and deliver to recipients. Jewish Family & Child Services Family Table is the response of the Greater Boston Jewish community to the needs of area Jewish families who cannot afford the basic necessities of life. Family Table collects food, paper goods, personal hygiene items, as well as Shabbat candles, challah, and ritual items appropriate to various Jewish holidays.
Ages: Children are welcome to volunteer when accompanied by an adult.
Time Commitment: Two hours. Monthly opportunities are available.

Global Youth Service Day 2016
Boston Cares
Date/Time: Saturday, April 16, 10am-1pm
Location: 50 Park Street, Dorchester, International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) building. The actual event will NOT be held at 50 Park Street. Once you have arrived at 50 Park Street, turn onto Mapes Street and follow for about 1/4 mile. The IUEC Local 4 building will be on your left. Plenty of parking is available. The location is less than a ten-minute walk from the Fields Corner Red Line MBTA station.
Global Youth Service Day is an annual celebration of youth in service. GYSD is the largest service event in the world, engaging youth in over 100 countries and 6 continents. By participating in this project, you will be joining millions of youth everywhere for the world's largest annual day of youth service! This year's Global Youth Service Day event with Boston Cares will focus on making literacy fun for kids in local Boston Public Schools! Finished projects will be donated to the Roger Clap Innovation School, Dr. William W. Henderson Inclusion School, and Dante Aligheiri Montessori School. GYSD volunteers will be working on the following projects:
- Building, sanding, and painting 10 bookshelves
- Crafting 250 reading journals
- Assembling 225 lap desks
Ages: This is a great opportunity for families with children age five and older. An adult must accompany all volunteers under the age of 15, with at least one adult for every three youth volunteers under the age of 18. All volunteers under the age of 18 must bring a signed permission form. Forms will be available at the projects for parents/guardians who will be attending the project with their youth volunteer. Annual Charles River Clean Up
Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA)

Location: There are a
number of locations along the Charles River in the greater Boston area
The Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup brings together over 3,000 volunteers each year to pick up litter, remove invasive species and assist with park maintenance. You and your family can give back to the community while enjoying the beauty and wildlife along the Charles River. Volunteers build on the connections they establish during this day of stewardship by returning to the Charles to exercise, play and enjoy nature throughout the year.
Ages: All ages are welcome but an adult must supervise children.

Collect Supplies for Cradles to Crayons

Project 351 is an innovative statewide youth-driven service organization that unites an 8th grade Ambassador from every city and town in Massachusetts for a transformative year of leadership development, enrichment, and impact. Through unique service opportunities, Ambassadors gain valuable skills, create positive change in communities, build a statewide network of values-aligned peers, and unite the Commonwealth in common purpose. For the fifth year in a row, their Spring Service program will mobilize schools and communities in support of Cradles to Crayons. From now until April 8, 289 Ambassadors across the state will collect children's clothing, shoes, and books for Cradles to Crayons at 331 service sites, including 281 schools. This statewide effort will impact thousands of children and help ensure we meet the rising demand for KidPacks® (Cradles to Crayons customized packages containing one week's worth of clothing, shoes, and other essentials).
